It certainly shouldn't be the only backup. But for a secondary backup, what's the downside?

They have access to your work.

Do you honestly think that cloud providers or any potential hackers care about your photographs?

Give me a break. They have access to your computer too if they want it. They had NEVER been a case of stolen work or peekaboo from a cloud storage.

If you are seriously that paranoid shit down you're computer and go home. What makes you think they will access your data?

Just how are you asking for trouble?

Where you are asking for trouble is if you do not have s back up off site. Be it the cloud, or a bank box. I hope if you're house Burns down you have a backup OFFSITE, or you are Sol.

Name a business that does not have at least two back ups, off site, and different locations, at that.

Actually they do. They look for naked photos they can use for blackmail. And for photos they can use in various scams.

Sorry, but I call BS. Do you store store naked photos in the cloud? Do you really think hackers are looking through 10,000+ photos per user and then able to find the credentials for the user to blackmail them? Really? If you seriously believe that, I have a suggestion: don’t store naked photos that might subject you to blackmail in the cloud. Duh. With all respect, you need to make a better anti-cloud argument than that.

You’re not off track at all. Amazon is busy gobbling up the world. And you’re also correct in that mom and pop cloud companies are going the way of mom and pop camera stores (sadly). There are probably 100-200 cloud providers in the US, but only 4 or 5 I’d recommend - Amazon (who owns as much of the cloud storage market as the next 4-5 providers combined), Microsoft, Google, Apple and IBM.

On the subject of mom and pop photo stores, we are really lucky in Raleigh to have two such stores that are alive and well. Southeastern Camera has a huge selection of both new and used equipment and is staffed by working pros. They pay fair prices for used and charge fair prices as well. How’s that for an off-topic plug for a local store?

Cheers

That's great when I lived in St. Petersburg, we had around 5 stores Abners was the first to fall , Ritz became Wolfs then later failed , Camera Films Etc. Had to close , North Tampa photo was the largest and they had a lot of merchandise, I could hardly believe they failed . 10 Years ago I moved 95 miles away to Crystal river and didn't know about Pasco Camera exchange they are 50 miles south of me So I will start buying stuff there , it's nice to go to a store again I just hope they have children interested in photography as they are getting older like Me . They even sent me a Thank you card signed by both of them Husband and wife for buying my lens no one does that anymore ...and they still stock refrigerated 120 film...and 35mm go figure...

Cloud storage likely compresses the images on upload and does not uncompress them on download. A multi-terabyte hard drive would be safer.

The file compression of the cloud is more destructive than the repeated re-saving a JPEGs we're all familiar with. Our OP quickly detected this destructive aspect. And the whole file transfer process makes the USPS seem like guaranteed delivery ...

Many people's smart phones automatically save all photos to the cloud. So, when you go 'sexting' it gets saved.

And yes, they look through many thousands, even millions of photos. You apparently are unaware of the sophistication of hacking tools available to hackers these days. They don't just click on jpegs and look. They have very sophisticated programs that can scan millions of photos and recognize all sorts of images. How do you think facial recognition is done?

I've been in the computer business for since 1977. I have a lot of experience.

The moral to that story is don’t go “sexting”. And yes, phones CAN mirror to the cloud IF you enable that service. So if you “sext”, don’t store your naked photos in the cloud. It doesn’t matter where they are stored, if you “indulge” in sexually explicit images, transmitted electronically, you need to be aware of the very real possibility that you will see them again.

Just since 1977? I’ve been in the “computer business” for awhile also, starting with IBM in 1965. For the last 25 years of my career, I specialized in data storage (including cloud storage) for the largest storage companies in the industry, including IBM, EMC, NetAPP, DDN, Isilon, Ciprico and Oracle HW division, and worked extensively with the major cloud companies as partners, so yes, I know just a little bit about storage and the ways it can be exploited.
