Check white balance in the night pic
I'm thinking you should return at sunrise or sunset.

Thank you for responding to the two pictures. There have been some interesting comments. I will agree that the sky has the appearance of over saturation. There are possibly two reasons for this. The shot was made about noon toward the northern sky (45 degrees from the sun) and the other was that being a 5 shot stack with 1 stop per shot variance the sky just stacked dark. There were no clouds in the sky. Some said that I should have moved a little to the side to not cover the sign at the top. I should have taken more time but being in the middle of a US highway I was doing things in quick fashion.

The convergence of lines bothers me and I tried in LR and PS to straighten them but my skill level is lacking to make them work. It is amazing that even though I mentioned it in my opening it was thrown back at me like I did not see it.

The shots were made for a company that wants to display pictures of the buildings they had work on. It was my intent to be a little dramatic with them to get their customers and potential customers attention.

I do understand that we all have different taste and I find it interesting that over the years in observing the critics on this site, that some of these are really good “Monday morning quarterbacks”and some not so good. I have hesitated to put photos in this forum for this reason. Some times it is good to put yourself in the photographer’s shoes when looking at a picture. Even though some of you will take this critically, I really do appreciate the feedback. I do respect your opinions. And most of all I enjoy seeing your pictures, even when I would not shoot them myself.
Thank you for responding to the two pictures. The... (show quote)

All critics are Monday morning quarterbacks whether it be sports, photography, or anything else. And some are good and some are bad. You should never hesitate to show your work. If you don't agree with a suggestion somebody makes, so what. You don't need to accept it. An amateur only has to please themselves. A professional needs to please the client.

One thing you said goes against everything I was taught in photo classes I took in college. That was putting yourself in the photographer's shoes. I was always taught that a photograph has to stand on its own, not needing any explanation. I remember one professor saying something like, don't tell me if you took a step to the right you would have fallen to your death. He went on to say that having that information wouldn't make the image any better. Some would say that having that information would make a person look at the image in a different light. There is no right or wrong here, just preferences.

Dirt Farmer the above reply is for you. LR and PS are really great and I like learning more about them. It was much simpler in the darkroom days. But it took too much time and I still have a finger that shows what the chemicals do to them.

Looks like the building is falling down to me. It's not level.

"2nd. The color in the 1st is simply unpleasant to look at."

I agree. I was not there and I did not see the colors of the building but there is such a discrepancy in colors between the first and second shot and it could be the illumination of the night shot. Perhaps a custom WB is in order here.

I like the striking colors in #2. Maybe the sky is too blue, but it's my favorite color so it's not a problem for me. If the image is for the courthouse builders, I don't think the position of the flagpole is a big deal. The standard daytime shot also works well for that purpose. If you were thinking about ways to inject some creativity into the shoot, knowing it's for the builder, my mind goes to asking if there's any feature they're particularly proud of. In addition to the typical front facade, maybe you could offer them some options that show close ups/interesting angles/etc. To really show off the character of the building.

If this were a photograph for the town or a calendar or similar, I like your idea of a nighttime or other non-traditional approach. As another post suggested, drawing out the stars would be a nice touch. Or decorated for a holiday, or with people in the frame, when some public event is held.

Some people hang their hat on the term "brutal honesty". Personally, I see nothing wrong with compassionate honesty or insightful honesty. Hopefully you find enough of the latter here to continue sharing your efforts and learning...and cull the most useful bits of the former and leave the rest behind!

The second is a photograph. The first is an architectural illustration. I agree with most of dirtfarmer's comments though.

I like the day shot better. I might have preferred the night shot if it was shot at dusk instead of this black night. That would add some color to the sky.

I was asked to try a picture of our local courthhouse. The norm is a daylight, thus I wanted to try something a little different. Which do you prefer? The nightshot is a HDR with 5 shots blended in Lightroom and the day shot is also a blend of 5 shots in LR. Forgive the distortion and the unlevel. These were shot with a Nikon D810.

I prefer the night shot, but be aware of out of level.
