Yeah, those 1955 rates also precede the founding of OPEC in 1960. There's no line on that sign for OPEC's slice.

There probably isn't enough room on the sign for them. (Wow! We're agreeing on something!)

Interesting to see where all the money went back then.

I just wonder what the breakdown would be in this day and age. I think I remember Bill Clinton adding a federal tax of $0.50 a gallon when he was in office and that was over and above what they were already getting. I remember reading an article fairly recently that the Federal government now gets more in taxes than the oil companies do in profit and they don't have to lift a finger to get it.

Nothing other than fund the building and maintenance of millions of miles of highways that are used to support commerce, the population as a whole and the defense of the country and even for you to use.

Wonder where the money they collect is going as it certainly doesn't appear that it is being used for roads & infrastructure as it was intended, what with the condition of the aforesaid in this country.

I remember in the early 70's one enterprising gas station owner selling gas for 10-cents a gallon if you paid him in the old 'silver dimes', (1964 or before).

In New York we stood on line forever and paid the going price even if we had gold bars.
