I just wonder what the breakdown would be in this day and age. I think I remember Bill Clinton adding a federal tax of $0.50 a gallon when he was in office and that was over and above what they were already getting. I remember reading an article fairly recently that the Federal government now gets more in taxes than the oil companies do in profit and they don't have to lift a finger to get it.

Hi P.i.p; We're headed that direction with our current government. Soon we too will have gas prices that rival yours. We're already beginning to see the affects that the Presidents health care law is having on employers and unfortunately employees. Major lay offs, cuts in hours, companies not hiring replacement workers, and that's just the tip of the iceburg. If congress doesn't get their spending habits under control and we keep borrowing money to fund programs that are un-necessary, America will face the same kind of fininacial crisis we have seen else where in the world. Many people are blind to the fact that The United States is on a very slippery slope, they seem to think money is created by government, it's not. Government is the parasite that sucks the life out of the economy.
I received pictures of a lion stealing a Canon camera when I clicked that link.
I wonder if that Lion had a lot of memory installed to get all those pictures ! lol
Since the average salary was $4137 and a ford cost $1606 and a gallon of milk cost .92 cents.
It was about right.
Why can't people just look at the picture and say 'yup...that was the good ol' days...this whole world has changed since 1955. It always turns Political. Oh by the way .... Thanks for sharing !
I remember driving cross country in 1966 and gas was 14.5 in some states and you got a free pecan candy bar with a fill up!

Funny. When I was about 16 years old, 1971, the price per gallon of gas was about the same and in 1955. I even remember seeing gas wars with prices at 17.9/gal.
