I opened up my email the other day and had one of the emails on secession and read in with some amusement. I think it is more a sentiment of extreme dis-satisfaction with the direction the nation is headed in many ways. Lets face it, the debt is beyond the wildest nightmares of any prior administration. And with it our children and grandchildren are going to become slaves to it; unless the economic situation causes a total collapse of the nation before they grow up to care where they are headed and where
we put them. I believe that if the situation isn't corrected, they will curse us for what we allowed to happen. Some say that the question of secession of any state was settled at the end of the Civil War...well only time and history will tell. That said, there are some exceptions to that basic assumption. There are a few states, Montana being one, that did not come into the Untied States the way others did. They came in under a legal instrument called a Compact as a method of becoming a state in 1889. Basically a compact is a much like a business contract whereas if one party or the other breaks a contractual agreement the other party has the option of ending the contract (as you would fire a company). Nations and states have used the concept of the compact throughout history, such as a Non-Agression Compact (agreement) or water rights compacts between states (Montana has dealt with water rights compact recently). Here is the link to the Montana water compact if you want to read it and give yourself a headache or if you have a case of insomnia (this legalese will cure that!)

One could say those passing around such a concept as withdrawing from the union is simply 'stupid' or 'ignorant', or whatever disparaging remarks one chooses. However, does not such a reaction simply display a symptom that the country is in an extremely dangerous situation? And as such is a valid reaction to the situation and also a message to the respective elected official at state and federal levels that they had best cease the destruction of what is left of the economy and end the waste, fraud, corruption of government agencies and officials along with fraudulent abuses of programs designed to help those who are stuck in poverty, etc. Like some...er...elder...members I see dangers that we have never faced as a nation. As a personal curse I have read and studied too much history, and as a result my personal analysis is such that I hate to be living to see the fall of this once robust Republic. Any form of self-governance can only withstand so much strain and stress, even if self-governance is more resilient than a simple monarchy, or dictatorship. For once the monarch or dictator is removed there is a possibility of a quick change of direction of that particular country and society. But if a Republic fails, the only replacement is that of a monarch or dictator; dictator by individual or committee. If this Republic fades from history, the only form of government left universally on the planet is that of a socialist or dictatorial form of government and the choice is tyranny lite or full on tyranny by committee lead by a single individual.
Some say that the Constitution, Bill of Rights, among the writings of the Founding Fathers haven't been taught in school and, "Woe be to us..." Why should they be taught in school? Why haven't
you taught those essential documents at home? Oh, I know why. One can say, "I've got to get the kids to soccer, slumber parties, ball practice, music lessons; etc." That is a sorry excuse for not teaching your children and grandchildren about how and why this unique form of self-government came into being. If the Chinese family can teach their children and grandchildren of the greatness of the Communist Chinese form of government there is
no excuse for us not to teach our younger generation about the vision the Founders had for self-governance. I ran across a young first time voter the other day who voted for Mickey Mouse for President. When others of more experienced voters heard that they began to hassle him. I said that I understood why he did vote the way that he voted, and the look on his face was one of astonishment; then he thanked me. The older people look at me incredulously. The reason for his vote was quite simple, he saw that both parties were not offering up any replacement of failed policies of either parties, and I honestly told him that I too have been tempted to vote for Mickey in the past; although my choice this election would be Bart Simpson had I wanted to do a write in candidate. However I explained the path of 'the lesser of two evils' is what led us into the greater evil of 'no real choice'. I later gave him a copy of Thomas Pain's writing that included 'Common Sense' and 'The Rights of Man' along with 'The Anti-Federalist Papers'. The reason I chide the reader is because I'm guilty of the same. The failure of the older more experienced generation is that they have failed in their
duties to take on the personal responsibility to guarantee the survival of the Republic and Liberty by teaching the younger generation those concepts and their place in the future to do the same. So if one writes off the displeasure of the populace who call for states to withdraw from the tyranny of the dictators via committee in DC; then simply shoulder your responsibility as a citizen and elder to educate those around you, kicking and screaming if necessary, what the Republic stands for and why it came into being. Or at the very least, read the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and
learn what the founding documents truly mean. Then pass it on to the next person.
PS I shall make no apologies for my view of history and what will come should common sense evaporate from Human Discourse.
