Get Irfanview (free) and also get the plug-ins for it. Start the program, open a photo, click on Image > Information > Exif info. Or you can just press I and/or E to get lots of info.
Get ExifInfo - also free. Unzip and get the icon onto the Desktop. Find a photo and drag it onto the icon. A window will open with loads of info. Look down the list for Shutter Count (or whatever they call it).

What's the big deal about shutter count? I have two cameras I bought used years ago. I have no idea how many times the shutter was fired before I bought them and I have no idea how many times I have fired the shutter on each camera. When they stop working I will simply place them in the display cabinet with the other old cameras in my collection and look for a replacement--used, of course.

When you buy a used car do you ask how many miles it has been driven?

I want to check the shutter count to find out how many shots I made since I bought the camera. I think I made about 6000 shots in almost 9 years. Which is about the same amount I would shoot if I were using film. I want to find out that my shooting habit doesn't change because I use digital camera.
Now I sent the camera in for repair in late 2019 and because of the pandemic I use it very little and I now I suspect that Nikon reset the shutter count when they did the repair because the number 1253 reported by the website seems right if they reset the shutter count that time. However, the camera shutter was OK and it was the meter that didn't work right. They said they replaced the exposure board I don't know exactly what that was though.

As asked, what is the obsession with shutter count?
Who cares, just take photos.
I have no idea how many "Shutter counts" my FTb has or my 7D. Never will care as it has no bearing on taking photos.

Hmmm, and your camera is a dslr or mirrorless and supposedly compatible with the application? Most often, i believe it’s a software issue. Have you tried another app or checked for an update?

I am not obbessed with shutter count. I just want to verify how many shots I made as I think I didn't make more shots because I use a digital camera as compared to when I used film.
I asked the question because I am sure the result is wrong unless Nikon reset the counter when they fixed my camera.

I tried these 3 (nikonshuttercount.com failed on my Nikon) I picked a random picture (DSC_4084) and they both came up with 5179 for a shutter count based on that picture. That means this particular picture's file name should have been DSC_5179. This is 1095 MORE than the picture file number assigned by my camera which I never change. So theoretically, the file name my camera has assigned should also be the shutter count? I find this a bit curious, no idea why, but I know I didn't change the camera file count, so it seems someone snuck in, took 1095 pictures with my camera, then reset the file number count back to where it was when they "borrowed" my camera...

Later, I loaded a raw file, DSC_4725.NEF and got a shutter count of 9530. This is only off by 4805. Something seems really amiss in this shutter count stuff, at least on my Nikon 5200, and these two sites doing the counting.

Later still, I loaded my very first picture taken with my brand new camera, DSC_0001 and I got a shutter count of 2. That's only off by 100%. I can't imagine Nikon knows how to keep track of file names, but not shutter counts? Somethings wrong in Denmark, or Georga , or somethin... Both sites report the same numbers so...

I tried Irfanview along with its plugins, but it did not provide any information on shutter activations for my Canon 7D Mark II. I think Canon shutter counts are much harder to determine.

I suppose knowing shutter count would be important if you are trying to sell the camera and a potential buyer insists on that information.

If you use a tool like Lightroom to manage your photos and don’t delete photos that should give a pretty accurate count. I know the file name number on my Canon resets every 10,000 photos. Your mileage may vary...
