A bit more fooling around and using the Exiftool app, which is unbelievably robust, I get this for the first 10 files taken with my Nikon 5200:

As you can see, shutter count for my camera is totally random and a meaningless number. Files DSC_0006 and 0009 were apparently deleted, as are many files when culling my photo's. The Shutter Counts for your camera may or may not have some meaning, but I wouldn't trust them unless I verified them.

I really appreciate your taking the time to check you and your wife's camera's. Your counts are much closer than mine for sure, but yet and still, they are not the same as the file number count. There has to be a reason for this, and so far, nobody seems to have a clue why this is. I can assure you in my case it is NOT because of changing cards, resetting the count, or using an electronic shutter. I also rarely use any funky stuff, like HDR or any of the scene or effects setting, I do all that junk in post, and really don't get how any of that would effect shutter count anyway. I guess it's possible my camera is just screwed up, and your counts are off because of something weird, like using the electronic shutter/HDR 61 times. Oh, and deleteing photo's in or off camera has nothing to do with either counts, far as I can tell.

On that note, I checked my 4th picture, I had deleted the 2nd and 3rd and it's Filename is DCS_0004. Strangely, using the EXIFtool app it actually gave what I consider the correct Shutter count as 4. The next DCS_0005 and DCS_0007 were off by a few. Very strange stuff going on with this Shutter Count. I've checked 6 files and only one so far was apparently correct.

There is no doubt however that if people are going to buy and sell camera's using Shutter Count in some way to help guide them, it might be good to know what exactly the shutter count is or isn't counting.

Sure, this is DCS_0008, the 8th picture I took with the camera, and it gets
a Shutter Count of 61. The EXIF data is in the file. Excuse the out of focus, I was in recovery from Christmas Eve and just fooling with the brand new camera to see if/how it worked.

No problem. If you test it, let us know if your shutter count is identical to your file name count.
I was wrong when I said the shutter count would be equal to the number on the Image_index provided the camera had not rolled over.

On the Z7 the shutter count < picture count.
I assume because a photo take with the E-shutter still increments the photo counter, but the mechanical shutter count does not change.

On the D7000 the shutter count was greater than the Image_Index count.
