That's with my eyes. I see on the Zfc the lens mount occupies the entire body which is like no old cameras.

The lens mount in proportion to the Zfc is not odd at all. Itโ€™s typical of FF mount on an APSC body. Comparison pix attached.

That Univex Mercury always looked like some sort of space alien robotic insect to me. I love looking at cameras from that era.

The only thing not retro about the Z mount is that it's too big. No old cameras have mount that big in diameter. Otherwise Nikon can make the lens looks retro.

To paraphrase Norma Desmond, The lenses *are* big. It's the *cameras* that got small.

Here's a good Nikon Zfc Camera Review.

The original Nikon (maybe Canon) digital cameras were APc in full sized bodies. The Df and Zfc are not technological breakthroughs, but more for fun. I own the first and expect the second soon. I think I'll still keep the D850.

Youโ€™re seeing with your intellect, not with your eyes. You dismiss appearances and substitute prior knowledge.

That quaintly awkward looking oversized round thing on the front of the Z6 body is a major element of its 1930s to 1940s look. And itโ€™s NOT the lens mount. Itโ€™s the front standard which accepts a round lens board. Lens boards are available with fittings for Leica lenses, Nikon SLR lenses, T-2 and M42 lenses etc. it could also be fitted with a three lens turret if youโ€™re ambitious enough.

Pic below shows a Retro-Z with the M-Leica compatible lens board and a few associated lenses:

I only see the big round mount with the dot on it which protrudes into the viewfinder.

Yes, just like the dinky little LM mount on my Retro-Z.

I almost never swap over the lens board to the F-mount version.

Sounds like youโ€™re referring to a rangefinder film camera ?

For the Z6 although you use old lens the simply looks strange not retro. Not like an old camera. Looks like frankencam. Very much so that each component in its own looks good but not together.

Yup. Frankencam.

Itโ€™s not an aesthetic. Itโ€™s an anti-aesthetic. And *that* is very retro.

I wonder how an ugly camera can take pretty pictures?

Every time I see an Alpa, I want to scream. Expensive, elegant, but totally unreliable... hard to fix and keep fixed. I've never known anyone to have one that wasn't a joy to useโ€ฆ until it broke down, which was quite often. Sorta like owning a BMW after 60,000 miles...

That same question can be asked about ugly photographers since they have more control over the final results than the camera does.
