I just sent in two lenses to Adorama to be evaluated and they just got back to me. I sent in a tamron 18-200 and tamron 18-270, both practically brand new, barely used (under a year old), because I thought the pictures were a little too blurry for me, Ive never had a lens that I couldnt get at least one picture of a bird in flight that was good. These lenses didnt cut it. Adoram offers me 290.00 for the 18-270 and 40.00 for the 18-200!! Your opinions greatly appreciated. Ive never done this before, but I think theses are just a tad '?' low??

Ever try to sell a car to a car dealer? Not trade, just sell them one. You will be very unhappy with the offer. You cannot expect to get retail prices from a retailer. Use e-bay or similiar.

Once again...thank you all for your advice. I just thought that 40.00 for an 18-200 was pretty much giving it away. At the extended length is where they are blurry, but they take nice close pictures. Lesson learned, I should have stuck with the nikon lense! Thanks again!

True, true at a recent used camera buy held by a major broker they were not even interested in third party lenses or P+S. They did shell out $25000 for a cartload of used Leica gear

No. You have to take into consideration that they are used so the purchaser assumes the risk of damaged. Although you say they are "practically new under 1- year- old", It's your word. Would you believe a complete stranger off of the street?

Adorama is gonna quote you a price for "their cost" of re-selling your lenses. They have to inspect & test them to insure that they are in good condition. That costs money and they will deduct those costs from their offer. That's one of the reasons why selling your gear to a bigger retailer like Adorama or B&H is going to be less profitable for you. They got big by reputation.

I agree with the other guy who said to Ebay them. I would stay away from auctioning them off rather putting them up as a "buy now" items. If you are going to auction them, determine your selling price, minus shipping, packaging, or any cost you incure on making the sale, deduct about 5% of that total figure, then put them up for auction at the price you calculated.

I may get some arguments from more experienced Ebay sellers. I used to sell tech-books on ebay, I rarely got my price objective through auctions (back then, that's the only way you could sell anything). That was a good twelve years ago and I was younger and less wiser.

BTW...How much were you looking to get for them?

I joined Ebay shortly after they started. I did well in selling antique glass that I posted. I stopped using Ebay after they bought out Paypal because of the new stipulations they made sellers use. I havent looked lately but it was getting close to costing a seller 25 to 30% of your profit margin because of their new rules.

I agree it is possibly the best way to make a quick sale but if you have the time Craigs list is the best way to go. With ebay cutting your profit it comes close to what Adorama or B&H offers. Ebay was starting to get rediculas.

I agree with oldtool2's post above. I too used to sell on E-Bay, (hunting arrows that I made) and had to give that up when Pay-Pal became the only acceptable means of getting paid on E-Bay. 25 to 30% of your profit margin is just too much to lose when you're doing it as a hobbyist. My profit margin before Pay-Pal fees was only 20% to begin with(before shipping). I now sell exclusively by word of mouth and topeople that I had made prior sales to.

Hey Doc ..... I'm not trying to find you wrong but I just looked into your 25 to 30% expense selling on eBay and I think you're a little high .....

..... from what I see it's more like approximately 14%..... yea ya gotta use PayPal for payment for most items you ship but that protects a bit and it's supposed to be quick to get your money .....
