What devices, other than phones, use micro-SD cards directly? Just curious.

All of my DJI products to start with:
- Mavic 2 Pro drones
- Osmo Pocket
- Osmo Action
- DJI Pocket 2

And, since almost every micro-SD card comes with an adapter, I sometimes use then with the adapter in an SD slot.

I have a hard enough time finding my sd cards...those micro sd's are just too tiny...and then you have to fool with the adapters. I do have both...no choice but the micros in drones and tablets.

I don't think there is a real quality difference between the sizes, the problem is you add a second set of contacts between the camera and the memory chip. It is a potential for trouble not that the actual failure rate is high enough to worry about. How many times in the HOG have you read where someone has an auto focus problem and the first recommendation is to clean the contacts. It is the same thing and when you add a second set of contacts you double the odds of having a problem.

I’ve avoided them on the assumption that one more information transfer increases risk of failure. I may be wrong. Never tracked down empirical study or comparison. Interesting

The Micro SD card is far less robust than the SD cards. If you feel that removing the camera is causing wear and tear you can try using a cable, and if your camera is able, use WiFi.

Or simply insert/remove the card gently, using as little force as possible. And don't allow sand particles and other foreign matter to fall into the slot. Then the wear will be minimal.

Yes, I have heard that, although I have never tried. I hate those tiny cards.

I have 2 micros that no longer work. I have tried everyway to reformat them. I no longer trust them.

THAT makes a difference in what type of chip one purchases!
Not the fact that it is in an adapter.

I suspect the circuitry I’m the little card is exactly the same as it’s older big brother. Likewise, the cost of the packaging is similar. The difference is the market. The majority of micros are sold for use in mobile devices like phones and tablets. That faster more expensive memory is not a selling point for those applications. Hence, the less expensive slower cards are manufactured for those applications.

Thanks to all for their input on this subject! All in all, I'm still a bit baffled as to why using the micro SD card with adapter would be a bad thing and something to avoid in my camera. Personally, I plan to keep using the ones I own just like I have been for a long time now. I am also a bit puzzled about the speed issue between the micro cards and the full sized ones. I'm going to have to look into this claim, but having the fastest possible card is not a big priority for me. Generally any "Class 10" card fills my personal needs even though there are faster cards available. Class 10 cards are offered in both sizes and are fairly cheap these days. Frankly, faster and higher capacity cards only drive up the price and I guess I'm a bit of a cheapskate. As previously stated, I generally stick with the 32 gig cards to stay compatible with some of my older devices, but do have one 64 gig that I use in my chromebook since I prefer to save things locally rather than on the cloud. I guess to each his own, but I still don't understand why some manufacturers and photographers are recommending to avoid use of the micro SD cards with adapter in our cameras. Frankly, I have yet to hear about a real problem or any other really good reason to change over to the full sized chips. Good luck and good shooting to all.

In my Younger days I would use one memory card in whatever Devise without formatting it. The adapter for micro SD are failing easily. Today each Device have its own formatted SD. To many errors occurred

I don't remember where precisely, but I've read recently that the use of micro SD cards with the adapter are not recommended by several camera manufacturers as well as photographers and have to wonder why. I guess they do have a second set of contacts that could cause issues, but I've used them almost exclusively for years now and have not had any real issues. In fact, the one SD failure I did have was on a full sized card and I think that I may have caused it by accidentally turning off the camera while it as writing to the card.

In any case, I would be very interested in hearing of any problems others have encountered with the use of the micro cards with adapter in any sort of photographic endeavor. Thanks for your input in advance and good luck and good shooting to all.

After having read everyone’s take on micro SD cards, I probably will put aside my superstitions. Since the 5D Mark IV has two slots, I will be using my CF cards. They are sturdy and reliable. The other slot holds a SD card. I can use the micro SD card and adapter. Right now I have the CF card for high resolution. I set the SD card for lower resolution. My superstitions have always been that the micro card doesn’t hold the same amount of photos as the Standard size. I also didn’t believe that the micro card is in every way like the standard size especially in reading and writing. It looks like they are matching on some manufacturers. But the max number of data I will store on any card is 32 Gb.

Never used them. Can’t keep track of my car keys and they’re a lot larger. Never had a full-size SD card failure so will stay with that.

I have had no less than two failures using micro SD cards with adaptor. Each time it was the adaptor that caused the failure. Suspect it was related to transferring files from the camera to computer via card reader.
