Cellphones and many security cameras use micro cards.

More and more devices are using the micro version.
It's probably cheaper to make (and warehouse) the micro (for which utilization is increasing) and an adapter than it is to make the identical memory device in two different packages.

As for the heat vs. device speed, plastic is not a good heat conductor.
The die in an SD case will not dissipate that much more heat than a die in a micro SD case.
And the duty cycle is not as great as memory in a computer.

Ok I will take your word for it but there is no mention anywhere I can find about it. Normally the tool opens the SIM slot but perhaps it takes a microSD too

Yes, there’s two slots on the 12. One for SIM card and one from r Micro SD card.

Can you post a photo? Where is the slot located?

I am sorry but I no longer believe you about iphone 12 accepting a microSD card. There is absolutely no confirmation of this on the internet and plenty of places that say unfortunately still no microSD support. Not sure if you are mistaking the SIM slot or what but I am sure no microSD slot.

Articles I've seen so far indicate the memory not being expandable.
