In this article is a link to the German lab test where a lab tested 20 commuter masks. Some of them wore the same mask day after day, often without washing. 11 of the 20 masks had 100,000 bacteria colonies growing on them; 3 had over 1 million. And they also found staph.

I used to not use my seat belt - then after a couple DAYS of riding an ambulance I always buckle up - as for the mask - if they work like the seat belt - when it is needed and works for my protection - I use them the same way. I am 83 and in the high mortality group so I treat the mask like a seat belt - wear it when I go anywhere in public.

It doesn't prevent the spread. It assists in lowering the transmission. If someone wears a mask but not properly and doesn't practice basic hygiene then the mask is rendered pretty useless.

Rose: we finally agree. Masks are not an absolute guarantee. No one ever said they could! Many folks choose to wear their masks properly; not covering your nose renders the mask ineffectual. Wearing it in such a way is the equivalent of wearing a condom with the tip cut off!
I have seen masks that are basically nylon stocking pieces with ear straps. Certainly they are worthless.
