Thanks again for your help, none of that worked either, going to give up for tonight, tomorrow might try John’s suggestion of trying a different video card, I removed the card and tried the on-board graphics but am not sure if hp disabled them as the dvi ports were covered with a plastic piece that says do not remove. In any event that didn’t work either.

I don’t think I have any other old windows pc’s around to cabbage parts out of but will look tomorrow, good night

It might very well be the graphics card. It's hard to diagnose without seeing it. If the computer has an onboard video card, I would take out the graphics card and plug the monitor in the onboard graphics card.

If it doesn't have onboard graphics, you can probably go to a local store and buy a cheap graphics card just to test, then , errr...return it, or keep it for a spare. I have random odds and ends from old computers, so I just switch out and troubleshoot as needed.

I give that a try tomorrow, not sure if I have any old ones to cabbage a part out of. Thanks for your suggestion. Oh yeah, the on-board graphics didn’t work either.

No problem thanks for your help, I just tried delete key and do not see the bios on the screen, got a no signal detected and then just black

Oops - I’m about 1 post behind you.

You mentioned the on-board DVI connector, but does it have a plain old VGA video out connector? That will usually let you get into the BIOS by pressing delete on boot up, regardless of driver or HD or any other issue short of a bad MB or power supply. It sounds as if the power supply is up because you see lights and the fans are up, BUT that doesn’t mean all the power supply voltages are good, and HP is notorious for using marginal power supplies.

It’s not uncommon for the graphics card driver to become inoperable in Win 10, usually after a Windows update - I’ve had it happen to me. Go through the process mentioned in the Microsoft note I referenced above. The trick is to get into safe mode and either update the graphics driver or roll back the update using system restore. Let us know tomorrow if that works...

I have an hp desktop with windows 10, it is a few years old, I use it for quick books, nothing else. It will not boot or if it is no video at all is showing up on the monitor. I am suspecting the hard drive might have died only because that is the usual cause of problems.

My question for you folks that are good with windows is what things might you think causes this and 2, is there any way to download a boot copy of windows to a USB to then try and boot it bypassing the hard drive. The only caveat to that is I only have Mac computers that I can use for the download.

Thanks for any suggestions. If I can’t get it going, I guess I will be picking up a new one on the Boxing Day sales

You can test the hard drive with one of these:

https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-External-Lay-Flat-Docking-EC-DFLT/dp/B00LS5NFQ2/ref=sr_1_4?crid=3BCV0KZ7RU3CY&keywords=sabrent+drive+enclosure&qid=1576642417&s=electronics&sprefix=sabrent+drive+enclo%2Celectronics%2C592&sr=1-4

External Drive enclosure - should that link not work.

If the HD was bad, he could still get into the BIOS screen, and he’d get the message that a boot disk could not be found...

Do you hear any beeps when you power on the computer, does the hard disk activity indicator flash as if the system is loading? It is possible that your video cable is defective.

If you hear beeps then it is possible that there is a memory problem, a memory problem will prevent the computer from booting into anything including setup. If so remove and re-seat your memory.

Take the 'box' to OfficeDepot & let them troubleshoot it for ya. It's FREE, too. Goid luck!

1. check All power to PC & Monitor for faults.
2. If possible, swap monitor/cable to rule out the monitor.
3. Possible issues are: video card, HD, monitor, & PC to Monitor cable.

If you get no startup splash screen it's either the video card or the motherboard or in very rare cases the processor.

Try a new cable to the monitor?

A bad battery wouldn’t keep the initial MB screen from coming up, but I was also going to suggest unplugging for 30 seconds next after we determine if the monitor is good. If the case fan is on, we know that at least the +12V from the power supply is up.

Battery just allows the retention of date/time.

The problem of too many possibilities.

One more: The I/O connector on the computer side may be malfunctioning or not connecting at all.
