I can hardly believe my eyes that the Bahamas may be hit with a serious tropical storm when they haven't even begun to recover from the Dorian hurricane...
Some people have hurricanes, others have tornadoes or fires or earthquakes. The earth is not a friendly place. Nothing new there. It's a shame but there it is.

Dorian stalled over the Bahamas for 2 days:
"About 17% of all Bahamians are suddenly homeless after Hurricane Dorian wiped out neighborhoods and ripped houses off foundations. That's 70,000 people who have lost almost everything."(source

They sure didn't need this - - your concern for others is underwhelming.
I didn't say I wasn't concerned. I'll wring my hands but that probably won't help. But looking at the world through rose colored glasses won't help either. Disasters happen all over the world every day of the year and have done so since there was a world. And will continue until there is no longer a world. We all just have to do the best we can as long as we can through disaster after disaster, after disaster.

We have some days worldwide without major traumatic disasters. Just as was Maria in PR, it is the magnitude of this that begs compassion.
Nature is beautiful and violent. That’s reality.

Santorini, Vesuvius, Krakatoa and San Francisco 1906 come to mind.
I bought a house if Florida 10 years ago. It had hurricane straps from the walls to the roof to keep the roof on. It had concrete block walls with the openings filled with rebars anchored into the foundation and concrete to further strengthen walls. Windows had high strength glass.
Now when I look at all of the sticks of wood laying in the ground, it just tells me that the houses were build to withstand 40 mile winds. What do you expect to build a house in a 180 mph area to 40 mph standards. If the residents want better outcomes, they have to plan for it. This outcome was predictable.

What is new is the increase in both the incidence and severity of serious adverse weather events! There is no denying that.

Remember that , compared to years past, humans living near the coast and building near the coast has gone up dramatically. In years past, there was not as much destruction as there were fewer people and structures near the oceans...

Thanks for saying that. Empathy is in very short supply in America these days.

Actually that is fake news and a totally false narrative.

There certainly is denying that.
The fact is that media coverage is all over every little disturbance now as compared to even fifty years ago and has people on edge all the time. Which is exactly what the media loves.
It's the media that has placed your concept of "increase in both the incidence and severity" into the publics' conscience.
A study of history, ancient to recent, would put that concept to rest. And the interesting thing is that in the distant past, truly disastrous local events were unknown to the wider world because there was no media coverage.
The myth of a world wide biblical flood is the result of tales of local disastrous floods from many civilizations many thousands of years before the Bible, told and retold through the ages.
And it goes on and on through the ages from before there were humans.

Empathy doesn't buy bottled water and hamburgers for thirsty and hungry people.
Your statement really pizzes me off. There is NO MORE empathetic country in the world than America and never has been!
