Updates are issued often by camera manufacturers and some of those updates come when the camera has been in use, sometimes even a couple of years later. No reasons to be concerned.

I wouldn't worry about needing an update. The camera might have been in inventory a while. Since delivery to the camera store it might have had an update that they didn't put in the camera. If they had opened the box up and installed the update you might have thought it was a demo. I would go to the camera store let them install it while you wait and test it out again. If the problem persists ask for a new one.

Surely the camera worked properly regarding the play and delete functions BEFORE the new update. I am thinking possibly user error. But at least the camera store is happy to take a look at it for the OP as they should be.

You have gotten very good advice already.

The Playback menu is tricky. Read the manual very carefully and make sure the playback settings are what you want. It is very easy to push a button on the back of the camera that will change some of the Playback features. (I have done this many times).

One thing you might want top do is to search the Internet for sample Playback camera settings for a D 500, D5 or D 850 and use these as a guide.

Regarding the delete button it should work. To display an image already taken, you have to push the left arrow key first and then delete.

So I got my new D500 from a local camera shop in Auburn Al, 45 minutes from me. It seems to be functioning as a D500 should, except for playback and delete buttons. They work when they want to instead of when I want them to.
I called the shop and they say they will need to take a closer look and possibly need to update the software. I’m ok with that except for the fact that it is a new camera and why should it need to be updated?
What should I expect from them? I don’t want to over react. Thanks guys and gals.

All cameras should have the firmware updated as soon as you get it out of the box and have a few minutes to read the manual. It's normal to update firmware. It's even expected. Cameras are complicated devices and if you aren't familiar with how they work, it may seem like it's not functioning correctly but in fact it may be user error. I said "may be user error". It really helps to have friends that use the same equipment so that you can ask questions and get the lay of the land (camera). Good luck with your new camera.

I just went through the thread again and did not see any recommendations for a factory reset and then start over.

First, DO NOT register the camera.
Second, take the camera back to them and have them do the firmware update, make it CLEAR that if, with the firmware update, issues with the camera continue, you will return the camera for a FULL refund.
Three, never raise your voice, speak clearly and rationally throughout the process.

Agreed

Thank you.

I'm not good at reading manuals either!

I have seen a similar problem in other cameras as well and it turned out to be the processing speed of the camera to the card and then ,subsequently , the dial controls took a delay period before I could switch modes or alter crops and other tasks I wanted to do right after I took the shot.

A firmware update may correct this or not. Have the camera dealer check it out as you mentioned to make sure it is not a sticky switch contact which would certainly put a wrench in the works.

Let us know the results as we are always interested in such things.

Not good that a camera store wouldn't have checked over the camera for function & checked firmware for currency, updating as required. If a buyer objects to the box being opened, the explanation for doing so should be accepted & appreciated.

Maybe they did. Somebody just took a shot in the dark when they said firmware, In fact it is very unlikely to be the problem or everyone with older D500's would be complaining about this issue.

My shot in the dark was possibly no card.

We won't know unless or until the OP reports back.

LOL, funny how so many want to take it back.

Some feedback from the OP would be nice.

Yes! A camera shouldn't need an update for the controls to work. Time for a new camera. The local store might not want to swap cameras, but you should be able to return it for a refund and then buy a new one. That's one advantage of buying online - easy returns.

I buy from Campus Camera in Kent Ohio, they are happy to take a return as long as everything is there and the warranty has not been sent in. I prefer brick and mortar store to on line. Always like the PERSONAL touch.

I get a personal touch from B&H, Adorama, Cameta and KEH. Never had an issue with a return and dozens of orders. Great at fielding questions, customer satisfaction and speedy delivery. Just ask my wife!
