New D500 problems

So I got my new D500 from a local camera shop in Auburn Al, 45 minutes from me. It seems to be functioning as a D500 should, except for playback and delete buttons. They work when they want to instead of when I want them to.
I called the shop and they say they will need to take a closer look and possibly need to update the software. I’m ok with that except for the fact that it is a new camera and why should it need to be updated?
What should I expect from them? I don’t want to over react. Thanks guys and gals.

I wouldn't worry about needing an update. The camera might have been in inventory a while. Since delivery to the camera store it might have had an update that they didn't put in the camera. If they had opened the box up and installed the update you might have thought it was a demo. I would go to the camera store let them install it while you wait and test it out again. If the problem persists ask for a new one.

Awesome advise. I’ll do just that. Thanks Jim

There have been a couple of recent firmware updates for the D500, so as stated above, it is reasonable that it might not be current. Another thing you might want to do before taking it back is to perform a Factory Reset. My D500 had to go to Nikon for service a couple of months ago, and when it was returned to me, the flash interface didn't work at all. The camera had apparently accidentally been left in some sort of diagnostic mode after final testing. Like you, I was upset at first, but doing the reset was a lot quicker and easier than returning it to Nikon. It's hard to know what buttons someone might have pressed when looking at the camera during its time on the shelf.

Today's cameras are extremely complex systems, though. If the reset doesn't do it, give the store (and Nikon, if necessary) a chance to straighten things out.

You are so lucky to have a real camera shop 45 minutes away to deal with any issues you might have. Mine are all gone.

Somehow it doesn't sound like your issues are related to firmware. I would put one card in the camera and read the manual...not necessarily in that order.

It is always a good idea to update the firmware. You can do it yourself at the Nikonusa Download Site. Just follow the instructions step by step.

https://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/download/fw/323.html

The latest firmware versions for your camera are "C" 1.20 and "LD" 2.017

Firmware Version is the last item in your Setup Menu, so you can check if you are up to date without going to the store.

That said, if firmware was the issue everyone with an older D500 who hasn't updated their firmware would have the same issue. I haven't heard anyone else making a similar complaint.

Maybe post a better description of your issue. .

This may sound dumb:

Did you put a card in the camera? I just checked my D500. You can take and playback some pictures without a card in the camera. When you turn the camera off they are deleted. The screen would say demo when seeing the images.

Don't be so quick! Five will get you ten that there's an operator error involved.

Where do you think the low shutter count 'refurbs' come from?

I've had my share of frustrations. Wonderful stuff in that manual.

Exactly why the first picture I take when purchasing a new body is to check the shutter count. If it's new, it should be 0001...

One step at a time, one step at a time.
First, DO NOT register the camera.
Second, take the camera back to them and have them do the firmware update, make it CLEAR that if, with the firmware update, issues with the camera continue, you will return the camera for a FULL refund.
Three, never raise your voice, speak clearly and rationally throughout the process.

I agree that it doesn't sound like a firmware issue. While it is possible, or perhaps evening likely, that this is an mechanical or electronic issue with the camera, he needs to make sure it's not user error first.

If the issue is intermittent and doesn't happen all the time, the dealer may not see it when he brings it in. If it happens again after taking it to the shop, I would ask for a new body. Unfortunately, one of the downsides of returning a defective camera with an intermittent problem to a small dealer will be their reluctance to replace the camera when they can't see the problem themselves.

Yes! A camera shouldn't need an update for the controls to work. Time for a new camera. The local store might not want to swap cameras, but you should be able to return it for a refund and then buy a new one. That's one advantage of buying online - easy returns.
