My Dad was a pilot in these (and 24's) with the Mighty 8th during WWII. A few years back, the CAF was in town giving rides....yes, for major bank. I had booked a flight for the next day (the only one) but the pilot got sick and couldn't fly. Since they had to get to the next city, the co-pilot was to do the transit leg. They felt really bad about cancelling and decided that they'd take me on the transit for free....if I could find a way home. My gf at the time said she'd drive up to get me....3 hrs each way. So, I went and got to stand right behind my "father" for the entire flight, wearing a headset. It was really foggy at the destination and these planes don't have radar--they flew IFR with directions from the tower. Despite the very poor visibility at the field, the pilot brought her in smooth as satin. When we taxied up to the tower, gf was there to greet us decked out in a navy blue dress with white polka dots, red belt, red heels, blue had with a small veil and white gloves---just like a pin up doll. Needless to say, there was a lot of interest in getting her to pose for pix with the B-17. Those two beauties made the day for the good old boys and young boys alike!
