What are the options when out of town/country to back up images on an SD card with no access to a computer?
Related question. If using an iPad to transfer from the camera does it automatically convert RAW to JPEG if you use the iPad to later download (via home computer) to your back up hard drive?

WD makes a portable hard drive with a slot for a memory card. On the other hand, are you concerned about losing your memory cards? Once the image is on the card, it's safe - as long as you keep the card safe. There are lots of secure SD card wallets available. If a card is defective, backing it up isn't going to help.
As for backing the card up to an iPad, how much memory does the iPad have? It probably has less than a single SD card. The device receiving the data doesn't care what information it's carrying - raw or JPEG. It's just a file.
If you really want to back everything up while traveling, bring a small computer with you. I got a little netbook with a 300GB drive, but it's slow. I'd bring a MacBook Pro next time.
Many thanks for the quick response.
The question is related to losing (i) the camera containing an SD card or (ii) or SD cards that are full.
Would 300GB provide sufficient space for LR?

Don’t read to much in too this back up malarkey! Most decent cameras have a back up slots. Decent cards very rarely go down. If you are plugged into that situation. There are loads of programs for just a few dollars, that will bring it back to life. I have had two card fail and recovered both. Some images where years old. Go out click away, have fun 😉
Thanks

The camera will automatically convert the RAW to JPEG if configured to do so, an iPad/tablet/phone in itself, will not.
I have a 10" Samsung Galaxy tablet. It has a micro SD card slot. It also has a USB/Charging port. With an USB adapter, you can copy SD card files to the micro SD card for backups. Micro SD cards have become cheap enough that, for backups, this is feasible.
AFAIK, iPads don't have card slots, so it wouldn't work.
Thanks.
When you mention configuration are you referring to say how an iPad is configured or the camera.
I have the Canon T6. There are two RAW settings; (i) RAW and (ii) RAW plus a "JPEG Fine" version. If I saved to (i) RAW then the images on an iPad would should be saved as RAW?
Thanks
Besides an iPad I have a Galaxy Tab A which does not have an SD card slot just the Charging Port.
Do you know if there are SD card readers that could utilize the charger port?
I think it is far more practical to simply buy multiple SD cards; when the one in the camera is approaching full, remove it from camera, label it and put it in a safe place, then insert a new card into the camera. Unless you are out in the wilderness, you can always buy additional SD cards while on your trip if needed. Practically every convenience store sells them nowadays. Wait until after you return from your trip to transfer images off the SD cards and back them up. They will still be there.
Thanks.
I do have plenty of SD cards.
As stated previously my "concern" is loss of SD card(s) and/or camera. I do a fair amount of international travel.

The camera, as I'm not aware you can have a tablet convert RAW to JPEG, unless via an editor.
If you save only RAW files in the camera, when they are transferred to the iPad they will be RAW files, only.
If you save RAW+JPEG you will get both files when transferred.
Like said above, a file is a file.

Well if you lose your camera there are three things too bare in mind
1) look what you are doing! Be aware of your surroundings, shoot in pairs if at all possible.
2) make sure you have your strap attached.
3) don’t be lax
Full cards! Buy more. Easy
I thought the question was back up in case of card failure my basic answer is have fun don’t worry 😉
Thanks for the lecture !!
The WD My Passport Wireless Pro comes in 1,2 and 4tb (I think) hard drives with software and SD slot for wireless downloading to your tablets, etc. It also does a one button download to the hard drive.
I used this and a RavPower wireless hub as 2 separate types of backup when on my last international trip. The RavPower is also a wireless hub, but I used it with a USB 3.0 cable to a portable hard drive and with a one button control, downloaded the SD card onto that HD. It also is a power supply, so it powered the drive as well as being usable as a battery supply.
Both worked equally well and the price difference may be a deciding factor for someone. The RavPower is under $50 plus the price of a hard drive.
