Z6 or Z7

I'm considering trading in my D810 with the $400 + promotion. I've looked at both the Z6 & Z7. Reason is that I would like to start reducing the weight of my equipment without compromising quality and future flexibility. The adapter now comes with the base unit.
I'm trying to justify the Z7, but cannot do this realistically. I don't need the file size (RAW) of the Z7. I do not blow up my pics for pro purposes. The display is great, but is it actually worth the price difference? Is there something I'm missing?
I'm sure I'll eventually sell off my DSLR lenses and replace them with the best glass for these cameras. But for now, I'll keep and use them.
Your feedback is always appreciated.
Thanks.

I'm not sure what you mean by this:
"The display is great, but is it actually worth the price difference?"

I'm pretty sure the displays are the same. In any event I chose the Z6 a few months back with the 24-70 F/4.0, and aside from the focusing being a bit slow in low light I like it a lot. There is a firmware update coming that will add eye-focus and will hopefully improve focus in general.

Take a look here:

Images I shot a couple of months ago with the Z6, the FTZ and a Nikkor 800mm. No editing was done.

An older 500mm on the Z6.

And, of course a few with the 24-70 f/4.0 and an old 300 F/4.0 that has no VR except when mounted on the Z.

One negative is that the body is a little short for me allowing my pinkie to slip off. I made a little base from a scrap of wood which makes it more comfortable ... for me.

Seems like you answered your own question in a very logical manner. But I have a question for you.

Which one do you want?

I've been very happy with my Z6. It performs far better than my old D7200, and surpassed every expectation I had. I have a sneaky feeling, if you are comfy with the larger RAW files, you would prefer the Z7. My understanding is the Z6 is slightly better in low light, and because I enjoy starscape photography I opted for that camera. I have amazingly little noise in my photos even t high ISOs.

In what ways. aside from the 45mp sensor with more focus points?

I don't pay that much for a camera with just one memory card slot. Reviews I have read say that the Z7 has a less reliable autofocus than the D850. Maybe the Z8 will be closer to what I need, when it hits the market. . You might have different standards. Let us know what you choose, and why.

I received my Z6 last week and I am very satisfied with my final choice. For 3 months I read everything I could find on both camera's including every review I could find. It is a personal choice but I don't need the huge files like a pro would. My Df has 16 mpx and I have never felt shortchanged, not one time.
You can always get the Z6 and shoot it for a couple of days and if it doesn't meet your standards send it back and get the Z7. Trust me, you will not send it back!

Phil

You have the D810 and I would think it makes sense to get the Z7. Unless you need speed the Z7 is a better choice.

Nikon anounced they are making a vertical grip for the Z6 & Z7 that will hold two batteries.

Nikon did announce they are making a vertical grip for the Z6 and Z7 that will hold two batteries improving the number of shots on a charge. I to am waiting for this grip for my Z6.

Thank you all...Everything said so far is right. Logical choice for me is the Z6. However, part of my brain says...'you bought the D810. And now it looks like you are trading down to the Z6. What's in your head!'
Jerry, thanks for the links..I've read them all and more. In fact, Imaging Resources does great comparisons of Z6 vs D810; Z6 vs D850; Z7.. as well.
Then I look at the $1400 price difference and my other side of the brain tells me that, for me, it doesn't make sense!
The move I made from the D700 to the D810 was huge in quality and range. 12.1 to 36.3... made a big difference as well. I haven't moved up to the D850 as I did not see enough reasons to do so. I was looking for wireless/bluetooth and a tiltable screen. Also, looking for GPS tagging. Then the Z's came out. Lighter makes sense. And it has all but the GPS. At first the single card was an issue. But if many of you, who do have the Z's can deal with it; then so can I.
So, one one shoulder stands the Z7 gremlin that says..'I'm the best and latest..buy me'. And on the other shoulder is the Z6 gremlin that says..'hey schmuck (jerk or idiot)..why are you spending the extra money when I do everything that makes sense for you!!!'.
Still not sure.

Once you add the adapter, I am not sure you are really going to enjoy much of a weight advantage. The units are only 1/2 lb different before the adapter. If weight is really your aim, you need to consider a smaller sensor. You should look to a different reason to move to the Z line.

I understand your position, I too am between two cameras. I have chosen to give it a month or two before I revisit the choices. Hoping that helps but purchasing the wrong one is a long time disappointment.
