Even the Army itself is charged with defending the Constitution from internal enemies and that includes politicians and democrats by use of force if necessary.
The Civil War had nothing to do with what you are trying to say. It was making war against the US and not defending the Constitution. Once powers that be ignore the Constitution then it is incumbent for the citizens to correct that including the use of armed force if necessary.

While most of this article is reasonable, I must disagree about the threat posed by "leftists" being in charge of the government. Right-wing fascists have committed as many murders of political opponents as have left-wing - over one million murdered in Indonesia in the 1960's comes to mind. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. So I argue for all Americans - including leftists - to become armed and trained. And witness the stupidity of Rush Limbaugh saying that "we have to march on Washington and take our country back" - after Barack Obama was elected president by the majority of Americans. Depends on the situation.
I have the 1911 in the night stand as it is quickest and is cocked and locked.
I agree a good short, 18", 12 gauge is also very good. Have a double barrel one like that also for home use.
The AR platform also works extremely well though as well due to no recoil and rapid follow up shot.
