Option #1 for pleasure unless it is exceptionally important on my D5 and D850

I typically use Option 1, but have also used Option 4.

Option 4 is copying a card to a second card if someone wants a copy to take away with them. Rare, but I have done that a few times after family events.

I was just wondering how people use their camera with dual card slots. Now I understand for paid jobs you would use one for backup (option #2), but for just shooting around, e.g., vacation, parties, general shooting, etc. What configuration do you use:

1. Auto switch (when one card gets full switches to next card)
2. Record to multiple cards
3. Only record to the selected card

I record the RAW image to slot #1, and the JPEG to slot #2.

Option #3. I use the IQD card only (D850)...and leave the other card slot empty. That strategy didn't serve me well at Custer State Park in SD recently as my card filled while a great Antelope shot approach within 20 feet. Oh well, my strategy was OK, I just should have placed a new IQD in the slot instead of depending on vacancy in the existing one. Live and learn!

I use #1 for Raw and #2 for JPEGs on my D850 or D500 except when shooting birds or other fast moving subjects when I shoot lossless compressed Raw in my EQD card only. To this day I can't tell you if this has been why I got the best shot because the difference is only a couple of fps. It's not like going to a D5. If I was shooting sports for money I'd stick a battery pack on my D500 and shoot JPEG Fine.

I shoot raw in both slots. My mode is different than any I have seen here. When I shoot a curling bonspiel, I usually wind up with 6 groups of shots: Teams; On Ice; Warm Room; Awards; Lead Of the Spiel and Finals. I don’t like to do multiple groups on the same card so when I had a single slot camera I was constantly swapping cards and messing up more than once. Now that I have two cards it makes my life easier. I start with card 1 (CF) for Teams and card 2 (SD) for Warm Room. When the Spiel starts I will get 6 to 10 shots of each teams as they take to the ice. I then put this card in my “card safe” and put in a fresh card which I will use exclusively for On Ice shots. I also go back and forth between the Warm Room and the ice during a match taking shots of each venue and just selecting the appropriate card 1 or card 2.
When the first set of games have been completed, I switch back to the Teams CF card and get the next four teams. Then back to the On Ice card. I do this until every team has played its first game, then I store the Teams Card until the end of the Spiel. In the meantime I have been getting Warm Room and On ice shots on their appropriate cards. On the night of the Lead of the Spiel competition I will put a 16 gb SD card in slot 2 and shoot this mini competition. I use a third CF card in slot 1 for the Finals which will give me shots of the piper bringing the 4 teams on for the first and second event finals and also on ice shots during these finals. When the whole match is over I shoot the winning team for our display and for publication. The last part is using my fourth CF card for the Awards ceremony. As you can note I pretty much kept single events on separate cards and was able to jump back and forth between Warm Room and other events without removing the Warm Room card (except for the Lead of the Spiel). During the spiel I usually take about 1000 shots and wind up with 600 to 800 which I put on Dropbox for the partipants.
A long winded way of explaining how I often use the two slots for different purposes.

I don't do weddings so I set mine to overflow to #2. I also default video to SD slot #2 on my D500.

I always use both cards, #1 for RAW and #2 for JPEGS. I always take a back-up.

"If it is good enough to take, it is good enough to have a back-up".

But when I get to download, if the RAW is fine, I will delete the JPEG.

That's interesting, because if it's GOOD enough to shoot, I'd want my backup to be RAW also, NEVER Jpeg!!!

I shoot raw +jpeg, but to different cards. The jpegs are easier to process and show clients and share online quickly, even at the event. While the raw are what I use for the finished product. But my jpegs are quality enough that I could still use them if anything happened to the raw images. And yes I did once have a raw card go down and the jpegs were fine for the client after some post processing. Cheers

Yep. I shoot raw only to both cards. If I shoot it, I want a backup.
