Dual Card Slot Use

I was just wondering how people use their camera with dual card slots. Now I understand for paid jobs you would use one for backup (option #2), but for just shooting around, e.g., vacation, parties, general shooting, etc. What configuration do you use:

1. Auto switch (when one card gets full switches to next card)
2. Record to multiple cards
3. Only record to the selected card

I use option #1 on my D7200.

When I use the second slot, it is a combination of your option 1 AND dual cards - RAW to one and JPEG to the other. As I use 128GB XQD cards, I really don't run out of room on any one shoot/game. Best of luck.

I see 3 option #1 already. Interesting seeing as the complete panic over 1 slot is you must duplicate your shooting on both cards as in #2.
Option one is no different than having one slot and changing cards after 800 shots get close to filling it up.

#2. I don’t really worry much about card failure but I do have concerns about operator error. I reformat my primary card after every shoot. By having a backup, I have insurance against an error on my part such as inadvertently deleting files that I intended to keep. I do reformat the second card, but not as often or as quickly as the primary.

I also appreciate always having the second card in place in case I grab the camera for a quick shot while the primary card is still in the card reader on my desk.
Lastly, I discovered a nice plus to having a back up slot that is different from the primary. I love my super fast XQD primary slot but my notebook computer has a built in reader for SD. On a recent trip I was traveling light and didn’t want to carry a card reader if I didn’t have to. I just made the SD slot primary for a few days and was able to download photos on the road quick and easy.

For me i use which ever slot has a card in it, usually thats slot1 and slot2 is holding a second card.

Sometimes card1 is still in the computer and card2 gets used :) of course when it comes to unloading card2 card1 is in the reader and that gets put back in slot1 when i take out card2.

Since having 2 slots I haven't managed to go out with no card in the camera :)

I record to both cards. I don't want to lose my images any more than a pro does.

#2
I Use redundant recording for a backup.
I've never needed the backup since I've been using two slots(did before I had 2 slots!), but it's there.
The next most use is to shot Raw in one(for me) and Jpeg in the other. I do this for one of my editors since internet content of ANY event needs to be put onto the internet within hours of any event today. So I hand him the Jpeg card and he immediately downloads to his laptop and writes articles with pics!!!

#1 but in my D500 I only use theXQD slot. With a 64 G card I get > 1.3 K images

I shoot only raw, except when I have to have JPGs to pass to a speaker for a quick show at an event. Then, I shoot two cards, raw and JPG, tailoring the JPG menu settings to the presentation requirements.

I always use both cards, #1 for RAW and #2 for JPEGS. I always take a back-up. If it is good enough to take, it is good enough to have a back-up. But when I get to download, if the RAW is fine, I will delete the JPEG.
