Im currently shooting with a canon T3 and have managed to come up with about 1000 dollars to spend on some new gear. I want to stay with canon so I can still use other lens purchased but not sure if I want a new camera body or another lens. I have basically outgrown my T3 or so I believe and have been looking at the canon 80D however most people I have talked to said the 77D is a great camera. I Shoot mostly landscape and wildlife however am currently starting classes on portrait photography and some night photography.. Any suggestions would be great appreciated.

Can you add information on the lenses you currently have. It could be that adding a lens would make more sense than a new body, although there are many technology changes between the T3 and 77D or 80D.

Camera body: Why do you feel that you have "outgrown" your existing camera? What does it not do? If there are any functions that you miss having, ask yourself "Do I really want/need a camera that does this thing automatically, or is it something that I can do better myself?"

Lens: Here is where the rubber meets the road, If a lens has an insufficient sized aperture or is not capable of crisp clean contrasty photos, then the missing functionality cannot be made up by the user (as they can with an inexpensive DSLR body).

It seems that money spent on excellent glass may yield better results than would money spent on camera bodies. Excellent glass is expensive though, so it may be important to you that any glass you acquire will be compatible with future camera body upgrades (hopefully years down the road). Be aware that some Canon/ Nikon/Sony etc etc etc name branded lenses MAY not be good glass, and that third party lens manufacturers may offer superior lenses at significantly lower cost.

The 80D costs a little more than the 77D but in real world shooting the two cameras are pretty much the same. I would go for the cheaper 77D . Both cameras are head & shoulders above the T3.

Hmmm, don't know what lenses you have but either of the 6D's sound like a camera that would suit some of what you do very well, better in low light than the crop cameras, produce better blur than the crop cameras for portraits not so good for wildlife however.

If you want REAL improvement the 80D would be the best choice by far. The 77D is still an all plastic Rebel camera with a pentamirror and no weather sealing at all. It even shares the same battery grip with the Rebel T7i. The 80D is moisture resistant and has a penta prism viewfinder. Not to mention better focus system. There are many other differences as well but those are the big ones.

Spot on - go for the 80D.

Oh yes my mistake. LOL.

From my observations, apparently very few UHH users know that the title can be changed, for a short time after making a post. And of course after that one could always email ADMIN and request a change.

I have a Canon 77D and have been very pleased with it. It has an outstanding focus system, with very fast focus. It also has a newer processor than the 80D (The Digic 7) which gives it additional low light capability. It is always interesting to hear people describe the 77D without ever actually shooting with one. They are typically critical because it is more the size of the Rebel line, and it may have a bit more plastic. Having more plastic is a positive, rather than a negative in my opinion. It makes the camera lighter. Modern day plastics are outstanding, and typically outperform metal when it comes to electronics products such as cameras. The features such as the back selection wheel and the top LCD are more similar the the "D" series EOS cameras than the Rebel line. It does have a slightly smaller viewfinder, and it is not weather sealed. For me, the viewfinder is great, much more than adequate. The weather sealing is not an issue for me. If you shoot in bad weather, or want a larger, heavier camera, the 80D may be the way to go for you. Otherwise, the 77D is a fantastic value right now, as it is on sale for $649.00. The features of either camera far exceed the abilities of your current camera.

MT, I really respect your camera knowledge which is far greater than mine, and I hate to take issue on this. However, I have a 77D and it does have the same 45 point cross-type auto focus system as the 80D. Also, the last time I checked, the only battery grip available for the 77D (And the T7i) was an after market grip. Has that recently changed?

I would echo that thought, but we don't know what lenses the o.p. has - if only EF-S lenses, going full-frame would require all new lenses and would thus break the bank.

The 80D would be my choice,as it has 1/8000 shutter, and many more added items.
