The senior pass provides other discounts. Campgrounds are half price (but not the vendor run RV parks). Guided tours, e.g. in caves, are sometimes half price. Sometimes that discount is only for the pass holder so it can be good for your spouse to have one too. At least it was when they were $10.

I had mine replaced free because the numbers were wearing off. Think I’ll keep a copy of it in case I lose or ruin it. Thanks for the reminder.

I don't know, but this is scary. If something is good for a lifetime and they force us to replace them for the more expensive ones, that's pretty bad. But then, that's government for you.

I’m pretty sure it’s a free replacement.

Does any body know rather these are still valid, I have heard reports that when they try to use them, they are charged $65 to enter a park, but as I read online on the National Park websites, they say the older passports are still valid

I have one of the old passports and it was rather worn out and frayed. So I decided to ask for a new one and was told it still worked that I would not want to change because under the old one I could get in more people and did not have the limitations of the newer ones. I had it laminated.

right, the old passes are grandfathered in - new ones are $20 per year or $80(?) for a lifetime pass -- either way it's a great deal -- they're good at all national parks, monuments and historic sites, battlefields, etc, and the pass covers anyone in the car

From the reference provided: http://www.nps.gov/zion/planyourvisit/lifetime-passes.htm

Interagency Senior Pass: $80 - Lifetime Pass for US citizens 62 and older. $20 - Annual Senior Pass for US citizen 62 and older. These passes provide access to, and use of Federal recreation sites that charge an Entrance or Standard Amenity Fee*. The pass admits the pass holder and passengers in a non-commercial vehicle at per vehicle fee areas and pass holder plus 3 adults at per person fee areas

Golden Age and Golden Access passes are lifetime. They have been replaced by America The Beautiful passes. The old lifetime passes are still good, but not all government employees understand that.

Originally the rule was if you had an old paper pass you could get a new America The Beautiful pass in exchange, no cost. Because of the confusion, you can now exchange either the Golden Access (no charge), or the Golden Age (for a fee) for an Amerca The Beautiful pass.

The State of Delaware accepts the Golden Access Pass for the state parks. After the change I was having a problem. I emailed the director of parks, or whatever her title, specifically asking if my old Golden Access was still good. She responded that it was. I now keep copies of the email in my car and just hand one to the attendant if questioned.

I suggest everyone print the current rules from the appropriate .gov site and keep it in the car.

I lost my senior pass after they upped the fee but it was still well worth it for me so I went to buy a new one.

Luckily for me when I went to purchase a new one the park ranger noticed my DAV card in my wallet and told me there was no fee for the 'Access Pass'.

It is a lifetime pass for all national parks and federal recreational lands for any U.S. citizen with a permanent disability. You'll need proof of permanent disability.

As a disabled veteran of any age all you need is your DAV card to receive the pass. I was told if I didn't have the Access Pass with me, all I needed was my DAV card for admission or another free card.

Hope this helps someone.

Thanks, that does help. I was sure that the old paper pass could be replaced. I'm glad it's free to replace. I've got the Access Pass. It's nice to have.

I think all who have used their passes and responded have verified they are still valid, but here is some info from the NPS website which states the same.

Is the Golden Age Pass still valid?

The Golden Age Passport will remain VALID throughout the lifetime of the holder. If the pass holder wishes to upgrade to the Interagency Senior Pass, they may do so in person at any Federal Recreation Area. The cost to upgrade is $10.00 from a plastic Golden Age Passport or FREE from a paper Golden Age Passport.Sep 1, 2017
Lifetime Passes - Zion National Park (U.S. National Park Service)
https://www.nps.gov/zion/planyourvisit/lifetime-passes.htm

What is a Golden Age Passport?

Golden Age Passport was a pass issued by the National Park Service until January 1, 2007. The Senior Pass is a lifetime entrance pass to United States national parks for those 62 years and older. The Senior Pass REPLACES the Golden Age Passport. This is a lifetime pass for US citizens or permanent residents age 62 or over. The pass provides access to, and use of, Federal recreation sites that charge an entrance or standard amenity fee.

Please note that the price of the lifetime Senior Pass increased to $80 on August 28, 2017. It is for U.S. citizens or permanent residents age 62 or over. It may be obtained in person at a federal recreation site or through the mail using the application form.

The "Access Pass" is different than the "Golden Age Access Pass". It is for persons with a permanent disability.

The Access Pass is available free of charge at any National Park fee area. To obtain the pass through the Internet please visit America The Beautiful - The National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass website. It is a free, lifetime pass - available to U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States that have been medically determined to have a permanent disability (does not have to be a 100% disability) - that provides admittance to more than 2,000 recreation sites managed by five Federal agencies.

Passes for Veterans

While in a park, active duty members of the military and their dependents can pick up a free annual pass to all national parks. Disabled veterans can get a free lifetime pass. The passes provide free entrance to more than 2,000 national parks, wildlife refuges, national forests, and other federal recreational areas.

Here is the link to the NPS webpage for current types of passes.

Hope that helps.
