My son was giving me some crap as I was sorting through my equipment. He noticed that I have all my camera batteries lettered. I have six, lettered A-F. When he asked me why I told him I use them in order, A through F as they run down and get recharged. So, for example, when D comes out of the camera, E goes in and D goes straight to the charger. He laughed at me and called me anal.

I just want to keep usage and charge cycles even across all the batteries.

Anyone else manage their batteries in a similar way? Or am I just weird?

No, I just charge my batteries randomly, I have a little over a dozen of them, if any of them run low, I charge them, but I don't have them numbered, or do it in a particular order. That by no means suggest, that you are weird, on the contrary, having a little system going is certainly a good thing!

I have 2 bodies that I use each with grips and about 8 batteries, I use the cameras enough that each battery gets charged at least monthly, I am pretty certain that is enough rotation.

I've done a little research on rechargeable batteries and they say the best way to extend the life of the battery is to use it. You don't want to completely drain it and you don't want to keep it charged to capacity all the time, both will ruin the battery. That being said rotating the batteries makes perfect sense, especially if you have several so one doesn't get left out of being used and thus fail when you really need it.

I don't know about memory cards though. And since I currently have only one each mine get well exercised.

Keeping batteries charged was a problem with NiCads, but not with Li-Ion

I have my batteries labeled but use them randomly. I labeled them so I know when each was purchased and can track problems if any arise

Thanks for sharing Dennis. I thought I was the only one to rotate battery charges this way. It's reassuring to know I'm not alone.

I use numbers, and not letters, so I guess we are close, as I have 9 for my Canon's

I use white dots.
1dot, 2 dots etc.
Not crazy but a good idea to rotate them.

Not so much a problem with newer rechargeables but back in NiCad days I did the same.

I add to each battery the purchase date to give an idea of when it might start to crap out.
I also number the batteries not so much to even use etc but so that if I think that a battery might start to be a bit low on holding charge I can note the number and keep an eye on it. Once a battery has started to be a bit suss it is worth discarding. Previous I would get back from a trip thinking that a battery didn't seem to have as much charge as usual but without a number (or letter) to remember it I would just repeat this until one day it just died but that could have left me a battery down. Better to know and trace than not to have any idea at all. This of course may be an age thing.
If your kids give you any gip about this then check to make sure they fasten their seat belts when in a car.

I don't do it with rechargeable AA and AAA (too many to track) but I do with camera batteries. It seems obvious to me.

Yes I do the same Dennis. I have 7 batteries but I number mine 1-7. I even have a little pad that I put battery number, when I put in camera, and when they were recharged. We all have an anal. Thanks

Tom
