I upgraded from a 50D to an 80D. Love it!

I was shooting with a T3i and upgraded to an 80D. The 80D is better in every way. I bought mine shortly after Christmas when Best Buy still had them on sale. I believe the sale price was $899 and I had gift cards from my employer for $450 plus Christmas gift cards for another $250. My family knew I had been salivating over the 80D for a while, and since I had the rest of the cash stuck away as mad money, I basically paid little to nothing for it. LOL

Why do you feel you need a full frame? At 24mp, and with right lens the 80D will do just about anything you ask of it.

I updraded from the Digital Rebel to the 80D last August about the same time as Peter. I too made my purchase from the refurb store and have never regretted it for an instant. I shoot little league baseball, flowers, landscape, cars, etc and I've never wished I had purchased a full frame.

It's hard for someone to tell you that you will be happy with any particular camera since we don't walk in your shoes. I suggest you go to your local photo store and handle one before buying.

Is the 80D a full frame camera. Im not sure but if its not then i will continue saving money. I dont feel there is any need to buy another crop sensor camera..

80D is not a full frame camera... but what makes you think you need one?

You mention shooting wildlife, landscapes and portraits.

For wildlife, a crop camera is better than FF. A crop camera basically makes your telephoto lenses more powerful.

For portraits, either FF or crop will do fine. Not much difference.

For landscape, unless you're planning to make huge prints (16x24" or bigger), a crop camera can work fine, too.

You will need to save up a lot more... 6D Mark II is the least expensive FF Canon at $1600 right now (body with free battery grip right now).

You'll also need a different lens. EF-S 18-135mm won't fit or work on FF. You'll need an EF lens. The EF 24-105mm "STM" is the least expensive of those, at $600 separately or in kit with the camera and grip for $2000 right now.

Any other EF-S lenses you have now can't be used on FF an will need to be replaced too, with full frame capable. Those will generally be bigger, heavier and more expensive. For example, compare a crop only EF-S 55-250mm (under 1 lb., $300) with an EF 100-400mm L II for full frame (3.5 lb., $2000). Or compare an EF-S 10-18mm (just over 8 oz., under $300) with a full frame capable EF 16-35mm f/4L (about 21 oz., 21 oz.).

So you'd better start saving up to get that bigger heavier camera and kit of lenses!

Oh, and an 80D is 24MP with 1/8000 top shutter speed, 45-point AF system... 6D Mark II is 26MP with 1/4000 top shutter speed and the same 45-point AF system. (Compared to your T3/1100D with 12MP, 1/4000 top speed and 9-point AF: https://www.imaging-resource.com/cameras/canon/t3/vs/canon/80d/ and http://cameradecision.com/compare/Canon-EOS-1100D-vs-Canon-EOS-80D)

If you decide to save up longer to be able to spend more for a bigger, heavier full frame camera & lenses just don't expect to see very much difference in your finished prints... unless they're 16x24" or bigger.

I purchased an 80D last fall from Amazon. I have a Tamron 18-400 on it and it goes every where with me. With the Tamron lens it is a bit on the heavy side. Like you, I shoot mostly landscapes and wildlife. It is a definite upgrade from my older Rebel! I love it!

I purchased the Canon 80D as an upgrade from the Canon T5i which I use as a back up body. Love it and you won’t be sorry, it is indeed an upgrade from the T3i.

No, it is not a full frame camera. 6D mark ll is. Very similar to the 80D, but a few hundred dollars more. If you want full frame, then save your money to get one.

I bought one on sale and refurbished direct from canon. I had forgotten what looking through a pentaprism and 100% felt like. This is an excellent camera, feels well built in your hands.pictures are sharp [at 100%]. All or my lenses work with it , it does use a newer cr2 raw . My last camera GG

Does anyone shoot with a canon 80D. I have a canon T3 and have bout several lenses so I would like to stay with canon. I'm looking at a canon 80D but would like to hear your opinion on the camera. Is it worth spending the money 1000 US dollars. It comes with the 18-135 IS lens. I feel with the shoots I like to take I need a full frame camera but my budget sorry to say is limited.. The lenses that I have purchased are EF mount so I believe they will work. Any advice is greatly appreciated. mostly shoot wildlife and landscape however I am doing some portrait shots for people also. Thanks to all......

I started digital SLRs with a T3i which is a step up from your T3. I still have and like the T3i, but the 80D is a significant step up again. I got a refurb body from Canon last August. Comes with a 1 year warranty like a new Canon, so it's hard to go wrong. The 18-135 (either STM or USM) is a decent lens, optically better than the first version. If you can be patient to wait for a good deal on a Canon refurb I would highly recommend that combo.

Not a bad deal.

Good luck

I did the exact same thing and really like the 80D. I keep the T3i for several special projects.

Go for it.

Again, repeating myself, the cheapest new full frame Canon DSLR right now is $999 for the 6d. Canon link is https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/products/details/cameras/dslr/eos-6d

And it is in stock according to Canon site at 8 retailers, including B & H, Amazon, Adorama ect.
So if you want Full Frame you can get it same price as Canon 80D crop Frame.
That said, if you have EF-S lens, and don't want to replace them, the 80D is a fine choice. Also look at the 77D, a little less cost. I ended up with the 6D Mark II because it has a few features I wanted and was willing to pay the extra $600 for.
Time will tell, but I will not be wishing I bought a FF.

If you really would like a FF camera and don't need to have the most current to impress people, consider a refurb Canon 5D mark II. The price can be lower than a 80D and its a work-horse. Ebay currently has some well priced available with under 50k shutter counts. (there is currently one with 4k activations as an auction item). The Canon web site often has them as well but they disappear quickly.

Buy the 80D. And with the money you'll save over a FF start a collection of L lenses. Case closed !!
