Don't know from your post just what you are talking about but if you're doing anything but driving then you deserve to end up in a cell!!

Police should be authorized to smash the phone on the spot - or at least confiscate it - when they see someone driving and using one. When I see a car with varying speed and drifting left and right in the lane, I know the driver is using his phone. I have had cars coming toward me drift over the line into my lane while the driver is looking down at his phone.

Agree completely Jerry. They should also confiscate the car of a drunk driver on the spot and let him/her find a way to get home.

I've seen cell phones, Ipads, newspapers, nail polish application all while driving the worst I ever saw was a pickup truck coming out of a driveway at a deli, the driver had pizza in one hand, soda in the other, my question, How was he steering?, This in not a joke, really happened.

I would also like to see a law against being a jerk when driving. So few people "drive friendly" anymore. Turn signal - what's THAT? Actually STOP at a Stop sign - why would I do that? "Right of Way" - what does THAT mean?

35 of my 52 years in commercial transportation has been as a safety specialist. I have worked with State Police, and federal DOT conducting educational safety training to drivers of CMV’s.

Cell phone use is one of the top reasons for the increase of traffic accidents, resulting in death, and or serious injuries. We have become a very vain society and can’t put the phone down. During my seminars, I always asked, “was the last call/text you received or made so important that it was worth risking your life, or other innocent drivers”? The answer was always no!

Driver distraction is becoming the number one cause of accidents. Consider how many people have walked into stationery objects, fallen down stairs, into water fountains etc. and these were while walking! It only gets worse when driving. Just the other day a young girl was killed when she removed her seatbelt to take a selfie, the driver was texting, got into an accident which caused her friends death.
Ask yourself this, do you really need to send or receive a text showing a picture of what a friend is eating, shoes they are about to by, the result of a manicure etc.? It’s beyond ridiculous. Next time you go to a restaurant, look around and see how many people are on their phones, when they should be enjoying the time with family and friends. In my family, the kids all over 13 are not allowed to bring or use their phones while at any family function. I do not receive calls from anyone asking me, where I am, what am I doing, or if I can pick up eggs. When I do get a call or text, I’ll look at it when I stop at a save location.
The best advice I can give you folks, is lead by example and get recognize what you yourself may be doing wrong. It’s not worth losing a loved one over the lack of control of our desire to brag or show off.

Actually, they do that. Even back in my days as a "cop" we took the drunk to jail and towed the car.

When cell phones first came out (the brick size), I was driving home from work on I285. The guy in the car to my right was talking on his cell using his left hand and then out of the blue he raised a cup of Joe in his right hand.

Perhaps I am old fashioned (the old part for sure) for I simply don't understand why folks don't take advantage of the "hands-free" feature of their phone if it is so important to "communicate" while driving. I also don't understand why people spend so much time texting back and forth when......of course.....they have a PHONE in their hand and they could actually TALK to the other person.

The smart phone technology is similar to an infectious epidemic. I enjoy observing people where I go and without fail I see more people staring at their phones than not. I've seen so many people texting or doing something while walking and they bump into each other, walk into things and trip over things easily avoided.

When I retired, gave up my cell phone for it was an integral part of my job to have one. I admit that I am an Internet Junkie but if anyone wants to contact me just call my land-line phone and maybe I might just answer it!

Not about distraction of the cell phone but of companies expecting the customer to have a cellphone and use it to register the product they bought. Home Depot - we bought over $100 of batteries/charger for my husband's new saw. To register for the extended period we have to take a picture of our receipt and text it to Home Depot to get the extended coverage. I have a cell phone, it does take pictures, I can text - but I screw up when I try to do more than one of those - especially the text with the picture. I hate my cell phone! However, I did have them send me an email copy of my receipt. Maybe I can send that on to where I'm supposed to text it to. I've still got 10 days to get it done. Wish me luck.
