Since you are on a limited budget, if you forgo the L glass you can pick up some really good used lenses on Ebay. Check out this site for reviews of al Canon glass and some third party lenses. https://www.the-digital-picture.com/Search?q=discontinued%20canon%20lens%20reviews

I have the 17-40 f/4, 24-105 f/4, 100 f/2.8 macro, and 70-200 f/2.8. All are “L” lenses that I use on my 5D IV. I had all but the 70-200 before I bought the 5D IV. I am am thinking about getting ether a 35mm or a 50mm prime, in the f/1.4 range, but not at top of my list.
If I where starting out and only had $1500 for lenses I would strongly consider the 24-70mm f/2.8 L II at about $1300 which gives you both 24mm wide angle for landscape and 70mm for portraits. This is the new price. You could probably get a refurbished or used for about 75% or less of the new price.
Good luck

I have thought about the 24-70mm 2.8 L II but my hands can be a bit shaky at times so I am a bit concerned about lack of IS. Do you think I am being overly concerned? For my own reasoning I will not consider the 3rd party lenses with IS. Jave had issues in the past on other cameras.

If you are shooting portraits you should be using flash/strobes so I don’t see a little shake as a problem. You are always shooting at sync speed, 160-200.
One only shoots wide open if on locations or doing artful portraits. So the extra stop is, for me not very important. If you need to blur, slap on a cheap and fast 50.
I personally only use Canon lenses. Some of my work is done professionally and I can’t afford to need to call tech and not be able to get help because I’m using a 3rd party lens, but your mileage may vary.

Just purchased canon 5d iv. I have no lenses yet and a $1500 budget for lenses. i shoot mostly portrait and landscape. I am thinking one prime and a medium zoom. Any suggestions as to best lenses and why you think they are best would be appreciated. Thank you.

Not sure if you're going to get 2 lenses for that price. With close to a $3,000 body you want in Canon terms, an "L" quality lens. don't go cheap just to get two. The Canon EF 24–105mm f/4L IS II USM Lens about a grand will do both portrait and landscape. While primes have their place, they can be very restrictive if you can't move you feet.

Good luck. FWIW I have 5DIII and the 24-105 and use it 80% of the time. Just enough wide and just enough zoom especially when you are going someplace and no idea of the terrain.

L lenses are not the end all of everything, I have owned and still own several and there are better lenses out there for less money. I repurchased a 24-105 to compare against my Tamron 24-70 and there is no comparison, the IQ of the Tamron is far superior.

Though I saw a 24-105 f/4L for sale here for around $450 the other day. It’s a great lens.

Thanks. Given all if the responses, I will definitely go with the 24-105mm f4L ii. Had been contemplating 50mm to lighten my load when I have family get togethers and such where i will not need a long lens. May get one of the canon 50mm’s 1.8 or 1.4

I have the trinity of Canon L zooms, 16-35 f2.8, 24-70 f2.8 and 70-200 f.28. In addition I have the 24-105 f4. The 24-105 II f4 is the lens that is on the camera most of the time. If I was restricted to just one lens this would be the one.

I would question anyone paying the price of admission for the 5D Mk4 and putting anything but premium glass on it. Doesn't necessarily have to be Canon, which would be my choice, but something high end. Tamron and Sigma make good aftermarket lenses.

Hello, I've been away for 3 weeks or so on a trip to Europe. First off, it is not necessary to buy "new" lenses for your Mark IV at this time. The suggestion for the 24-105 is sound advice for a all round walk-about lens. Also, consider other brands, like Tamron, and Sigma. I personally would look for a used Tamron 24-70mm, and a used Canon 70-200mm f2.8L Mark II. Look for these lenses at Adorama, B&H, and don't forget KEH, they specialize in used equipment, and give a 6 month warranty.

For my 5D IV and other Canon FF camera’; In Canon I have; 50 f/1.8, 85 f/1.8 16-35 f/2.8L, 24-70 f/2.8L IS II, 70-200 f/4L IS, 100 f/2.8L macro, 70-300 f/4-5.6L, 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS II. In Sigma I have their 50 f/1.4 ART, and 150-600 contemporary. My most used lense and if I were you I would strongly consider the 24-70mm f/2.8 L II at about $1300 which gives you both 24mm wide angle for landscape and 70mm for portraits. I would look for a refurbished. That said for portraits I use the 100 F2.8.8 L macro its amazing and you could probably buy both within your budget if you look for used and or Canon refurbished. You will love the new Mark iv it’s amazing.

Agree with Fred. I think this one would be a great choice. I have the L version and it's excellent.

The 24-105L is your best first lens. One of the best "all-around" lenses you can have.

I consider the 24-70 L 2.8 II a must if you only have the one lens.
