Just purchased canon 5d iv. I have no lenses yet and a $1500 budget for lenses. i shoot mostly portrait and landscape. I am thinking one prime and a medium zoom. Any suggestions as to best lenses and why you think they are best would be appreciated. Thank you.

I have to say the one lens that I have and truly love is the 50mm 1.2L. I got it used for $900 and it’s an amazing lens. Have it on my camera 90% of the time

I have the 17-40 f/4, 24-105 f/4, 100 f/2.8 macro, and 70-200 f/2.8. All are “L” lenses that I use on my 5D IV. I had all but the 70-200 before I bought the 5D IV. I am am thinking about getting ether a 35mm or a 50mm prime, in the f/1.4 range, but not at top of my list.
If I where starting out and only had $1500 for lenses I would strongly consider the 24-70mm f/2.8 L II at about $1300 which gives you both 24mm wide angle for landscape and 70mm for portraits. This is the new price. You could probably get a refurbished or used for about 75% or less of the new price.
Good luck
Bud

Portrate is good in the 80mm range and I like a wide angle in most of my landscape shots. You might look into the Tamron 28 to 300 mm. I use it as my carry around lens on my 5D IV. when I only cary one camera. Other wis I put it on mt 7D and a Canon 17 -35mm.

What lenses do you have already and why can't they be used on the 5DIV?

EF 24-105mm F/4 IS USM, priced used around $1000.00. Some might recommend the 24-70mm but you pay lots more and get lots less (70mm v. 105mm). As far as a prime a 24 to 28 mm range would get you a good grasp on focal lengths. Speed and glass quality will keep this around the $500.00 price range you have established. Your 5D iv is a versatile camera, any lens you mount will make a powerful tool. Enjoy it and your new lenses.

How about a 16-35f4is for landscape ($1,000) and an 85f1.8 ($350) or 100f2 ($500) for portraiture. Good combo for what you state your needs are - and all highly rated lenses.

Add a 70-200 L f/4. Refurbished on both lenses total around $1,750.

I'll add my vote for the 24-105 F4L IS II. It's my work horse lens. Use it a while and figure which focal length you use the most before buying a prime.

The second sentence of my posting starts with, " I have no lenses yet...."

Having read all the posts to now - the $1500 limits the choices but:
go to Canon's refurbished site: http://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/lenses-flashes/refurbished-lenses?cm_mmc=GA-_-CameraGroup-_-171121Brand%20Paid%20Search-_-canon%20refurbished%20lenses&Ap=Camera%20Lenses&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI7Y7-q7_n2gIVisJkCh1NdQeHEAAYASAAEgKmr_D_BwE

The first model of the EF 24-105 f/4* is in stock at $799.20 and the EF 17-40 is in stock at $589.99 - those two will cover 17- 105 mm and take care of your landscape and portrait needs. The extra left over will be enough to get a Yongnuo clone of a top end Canon flash, diffuser and a reflector or two. Next will be a tripod and head.

*I have gone all day at re-enactments, steam punk events and car shows with only that lens.

Opus, I shoot a LOT of portraits and use the 85 1.8 and the 24-105 on a 5s. When stopped down they are both extremely sharp.
I use the 85, 95% of the time but switch to the zoom when I need a wider angle or can't get far enough away.
In normal photography(non-studio) I rarely use the 85 but use the zoom for 75% of my shooting including to shoot sports!
Get the mkl zoom used to save money and the 85 refurb but you'll probably have to get in line for it!
Good luck

I would recommend the older version of the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 and excellent lens that won't break the bank and either the Canon 85mm f/1.8 or the 100mm f/2 for the portrait lens. There are certainly better lenses out there but I am considering your budget in making this suggestion. I have the Canon 5D Mark IV and the Tamron, it is a good combination, the new G2 is the same optical formula so you will not be missing much when saving that $300 to $400 to put to your second lens. The Sigma 24-105 Art might also be a consideration but I think that the Tamron is actually a better lens and has a full extra stop as well as image stabilization.

I really recommend that you take the time to read some reviews on these lenses, they are great performers and they will fit well within your budget.
