I'm running W-7 Pro, Svc PK 1.

The Windows Explorer Photo viewer will display thumbnails of Nikon's NEF (raw) files but will not open them (expand to full screen) in the Photo Viewer. Upon double clicking the thumbnail it is defaulting to PaintShop.

When using "Open With" and selecting the Windows Photo Viewer it gives me a quick look-see and then goes to the white screen with the message that "Windows Photo Viewer can't open the file because it appears to be either damaged, corrupted or too big". I believe my RAM is maxed out, at least its supposed to be.

Is there anything I can do to make the Photo Viewer usable?

A couple of posters have suggested that you get updated codecs from Nikon, have you tried that? It is the most direct way of addressing your problem.

Use Irfanview - free photo viewer, much better than Windows, applies embedded color profiles and reads D850 NEFs.

My windows viewer opens my Canon RAW just fine from a 7D.
Just did it.

It only has issues with RAW from newer cameras

The series in question was just that - RAW + JPEG. JPEG went from thumbnail to full screen easily. Photo Viewer displays the RAW thumbnail but gave me the "...corrupt, damaged or too big..." when I double clicked to open to full screen. I think the problem is too big. I guess I'll have to double check the RAM or default to one of the programs.

"Big" is probably not the problem: it opens my 50 mpx 5dsr photos without issue. The problem is that an old version of Windows doesn't know about how to process the RAW files from a recently released camera, so just chokes. Updating the codecs however you do it should solve the problem.

Did you not believe the first time it was suggested?

I don't understand your question - saw the suggestion with the link; followed the link and installed the new codec.

Windows 10 Home, no add ons just straight out of the box.

It can't display my Canon RAW files.
Raw files are manufacturer specific, not common industry standard like JPEG or TIFF.

Read up on the meaning of 'codec'.

Windows does not seem to support the RAW files of the D850.

If you convert them to DNG format using Adobe's DNG Converter, then you will have no problem.

Sorry, Windows supports NEF. You just need the CODEC from either Nikon or MS.

If you took the time to read you also would have found out that the op had downloaded the said CODECs. It solved his issue.

DNG is crap.
