I’ve been on four--two on Royal Caribbean (one great, one nice), one on NCL in Hawaii, which was great, and the last one on Carnival, which was an absolutely worthless experience. My cruising days are probably over, but if I ever do go on one again, it will not be on Carnival. I’ve only talked to one person who had a good experience on Carnival. My advice--if that’s the only line available, stay home.

People washing and sterilizing every thing that there may touch in fear of virus make them more susceptible to catch any pathogenic virus that comes around, as a kid, I was reminded to wash my hand before meal, the rest of the day we had dirty hand, pick up cat dong from the sandbox with our hand and guess what I’m past seventhy and I’ve hardly been sick in my life

Just some of my weird humor:

Try going to Vietnam on a troop transport like I had to do. Boy was that ever nasty and sick men all over the place and no moms to help us. An experience never to be forgotten and I decided to never take a cruise again for the rest of my life.

I’ve been on two cruises, loved it! The food was great! The staff were very meticulous with cleaning. A person can become ill in ways other than eating on a ship. You can catch airborne illnesses in the stores, doctors offices, workplace, church, restaurants and more! I was a teacher for over 30 years, some years I caught stuff, other years I did not. Everything is a gamble in life, but don’t let it stop you for getting out there and enjoying life!

If you spend your whole life worrying about what might happen and then foregoing everything you will die having lived a completely boring life. I have been on two cruises, had a lot of fun, rode back seat doing aerobatics with pilots 22 years or so old in the Navy and have done a few other less than milk toast things. Life is meant to be lived, not hoarded.

In a recent thread on this subject several people commented on food-handling as the source of illness. That is generally NOT the case. Norovirus is transmitted from anyone who is ill from their hands to surfaces to someone else's hands. Certainly if a food service worker is ill they can transmit the virus. A major concern with food service workers transmitting illness to the public is with Hepatitis A ("yellow jaundice"). Food that is not cooked should not be handled with bare hands. Most restaurants have their workers use gloves. As for handling of uncooked meat - the risk is more to the cook! And obviously utensils and countertops where raw meat is prepared should be thoroughly disinfected prior to being used for anything else. Beef may have toxic E coli bacteria on it, chicken may have salmonella or campylobacter organisms on it, and one study ten years ago found that 10% of the pork at a grocery store had MRSA (antibacterial-resistant staph) on them! You never want to handle pork with your bare hands, and if you do, scrub mercilessly afterwards!

Ships do a lot to prevent passenger-to-passenger spread of illness these days. But they also carry a large burden of safety and hygiene measures to try to prevent illness.
The CDC maintains a ship sanitation inspection program. It is pretty interesting to see how much they look at. This link is to an inspection report that resulted in a score of 76/100. This is really a bad one - most ship score in the 90's - but this report is interesting in the scope of things that they look for:

So far as I am concerned, it is the cleanliness of the areas people never see - the food storage areas that may not be well cleaned and also may be not well inspected; I did work for a while in retail food where nearly everyone hated to clean. My wife and I have been on two cruises and we love them. We will go again.

Wherever you have a group of people in close proximity to each other there will be the increased risk of some type of infection. Doesnt mean one needs to hole up in a sealed bunker.
