My wife doesn't think that my images will improve if I upgrade from the 800E to an 850.
But, she doesn't know a damned thing about cameras.

Maybe a pair of diamond earrings will help change her mind. Worked for me. Happy wife--happy life.

I upgraded to the 850 from the 810 and never looked back. The 810 is a great camera. The 850 is just better. Technology will always evolve. When the D3 came out look at the reviews it received. It was described as the most amazing camera ever. Look at the pics we took when that was the best available. Are those photos now all poor quality. I don’t think so. My point is buy or use whatever makes you happy. It is your hobby or profession and your money. New gear is always fun.

I was all set to order the D850, and went into Unique Photo in NJ to check it out in comparison to the D810. Brought my own memory cards, and shot images with each. I was surprised to find that I strongly preferred the color and feel of the raw image files from the D810. Also, the 850's files were stressing my desktop (Intel i7 with 32 GB RAM) and slowing down processing. With native files allowing 16x24 non-interpolated prints, the resolution on the 800 series cameras is more than enough for me. Your mileage may vary and I know new camera purchases are always fun.

I have the Nikon 810 and am hung-up on selling the 810 and buying the 850.

Not a pro, just a serious hobbyist taking mostly walk-about scenery, travels, family, and of course, Trooper Dog.

A decent set of Nikon lens to include the 85mm, 70-200mm, 35-70mm 2.8 w/macro (old) shooting in RAW and doing selected pictures in
Occasional an enlarged print for my wall but mostly slide shows with a Blu-ray DVD on a flat screen TV for the best resolution. I love SHARP focused pictures. Using Photoshop's Camera RAW.

?Will the increased number of the 850's 45.7MP pixels produce a less sharp picture even with a hand-held VR lens on the 850? (all of my lens are VR except the 35-70.) Yes, I do understand increasing the shutter speed - but still. . ..
?Concerned that the on-camera flash has been eliminated making flash fill shots not possible without adding my flash attachment or overexposing the background?
If you have gone to the 850 from the 810 I would be interested in your thoughts. Would you do it again and why?
I have the Nikon 810 and am hung-up on selling the... (show quote)

The one who dies with the most 45 MP+ cameras wins.... really it's up to you what does the D850 offer that the D810 doesn't. The enhanced resolution comes at a price - you will need top notch lenses to get the most out of the new sensor. OTOH, the high number of MP does offer some new opportunities for in camera cropping, especially for DX lenses. You're better off with an external flash...more power and flexibility. I was considering a refurbished D810 since the 850 was on backorder for so long....both are very good cameras...we'll see...
