Who cares if they are unarmed. They broke in to steal your hard earned possessions and for all you know do you harm.
They absolutely deserve the death penalty.

You are probably correct here. An instructor of mine who does not only commercial photography, but commercial videography not too long ago had someone follow his work van from a photography shop some 50 miles away and later rob his van at his home in the driveway of mostly his video equipment including some very expensive microphones. That seems to bother him more than the loss of his Nikon DSLR. Gave him an excuse to buy a new camera! The crooks following him on an L.A. FRWY was quite a trick in itself.
