Hello group, I am new to this site and am happy to read all the comments and suggestions from the many members this far.
I currently own (and love) my 7D MKII. I do mostly action sports and wildlife photography. I have a 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II and the
100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 IS II lens which i sometimes pair with the Canon Extender EF 1.4X III. I would like to be purchase a FF camera and was wondering what your thoughts were as to buying the 6D MKII as a FF addition to my current gear?

Read some of the MANY reviews online, then save your nickels until you can afford a 5D MK IV

I was going to say that too, Save for a 5D Mk IV.

Thanks for the input. Its not really a matter of cost. I will be using the FF for indoor non-action type shooting. Do you think the 5dmkIV is overkill?

Absolutely not, its a highly superior camera to the 6D II and you would never be disappointed with it.

Given the lenses you already own, going to FF should be straightforward. You have 3 reasonable choices unless you can afford a 1DX - the 6D MKII (which you mentioned), a 5D MKIII or a 5D MK IV depending on what you like to shoot. If you can afford it, the choice is simple - buy a 5D MK IV. On the other hand, if, like many of us, $ are a consideration, then the 6D2 or 5D3 (perhaps used) are good choices. The high ISO performance is similar. The 5D3 has a substantially better AF system, a slightly higher frame rate and more rugged, weather resistant build quality typical of a pro level camera (and weighs more). If action/sports photography is in your future, the 5D3 is a better choice. On the other hand, if landscapes and portrait photography are your intended use, the 6D2 is less expensive. For a more detailed comparison, just Google 6D MKII vs 5D MKIII. (But as has already been said while I was typing this, the 5D4 is the way to go if you can possibly afford it).

What are you not getting with your current setup that has lead you to make the FF decision? That answer may give a clue to what FF would solve your real problem.

Yes, for still-life photography either the 5D Mk II or Mk III will work fine. MT's recommendation is for strategic planning and, as usual it is very accurate. However, for "indoor non-action type shooting" the Mk IV is definitely an overkill. It shares several features with Canon's flagship 1-Dx series, (AF included) and that is as professional as it gets. Any of the later three in the 5 series will let you do what you state. The MkII is about 1/3 of the Mk IV's cost. Your money-your choice.

First off ..I really appreciate all the valuable input. As I.said...I love the setup that I have. The issue is that I would like to get the full potential from the 70-200mm lens indoors. The crop factor makes the lens too long in most cases. I also own the 100mm f/2.8L macro lens that I believe would benefit more on a FF body.

Given this, a 24-70 2.8 L would fill that gap as well. It is cheaper than a second body. However, a FF body would give you a second body, which is always nice. But if your only real issue is using the 70-200 indoors, you do not have to max out the FF body. The 6DII will probably serve. Or it will only whet your appetite for the 5D IV.

Side note: I am saving for the IV myself.

Another thing you’ll appreciate about FF is the improved low light high ISO performance.

The other option I was considering was renting a body to see which one suites my needs. Do any of you have experience with Borrowlens.com?

No idea where you are getting your math. The 6D MK II is $1899 and the 5D MK IV is $3299. The 6D MK II is there for MORE than half the price of the 5D MK IV. The 5D MK IV has MUCH better low light performance for indoor shooting, this constitutes overkill in your book?

I had the original 6D. A very good camera for the price. The 6DII has some improved features, particularly in the auto focus. Still, it's not really a big leap forward, IMO. I went from the 6D to the 5DIV, in addition to my 7DII, and have absolutely no regrets about spending the extra money. If, as you state, cost is not an issue, go for the 5DIV. You won't regret it. I find that, except for some sports and wildlife, I rarely use my 7DII since getting the 5DIV.
