Do you watch Simon Baxter vloggs on youtube. He has the most amazing dog for going on across country shoots. I think it is more the character of the individual dog is as important as the breed chosen. Check the rescue centres.

That is Maggie the Airedale Terrier with my wife Stacie and us photographing some Anasazi ruins in the background.
I have had many different breeds over the years and she has been the best friend, companion, and well behaved dog ever. If you are serious about getting a dog to go with you on your photography excursions this is the one.

Trouble is, if you take a really pretty female it always takes attention away from me and puts it on her, so I usually go for the less attractive, works out better for me.

If you mean out in the wilderness or even outside your yard. As several have stated Lab, Retriever, Shepard.
Definitely not any breed of Hound unless they have been specifically trained for pack hunting otherwise a just pet
scent or sight hound will find a rabbit, fox, raccoon, or the like and run off into the brush and you may never see
your dog again. They will track and hunt for miles, seemingly forgetting all their other training. Hounds can make great
affectionate house pets but they retain a stubborn and pack mentality. Also your neighbors might not appreciate the
howling and baying of a hound dog! I have two large hounds and I do not take them on photo shoots.
Do consider a shelter dog.

Do you want the dog primarily as a companion on photo trips or also as a subject at times?
I've owned many dogs over my lifetime (or more accurately, they've owned me) and my current dog is a Spanador, a Black Lab - Spaniel cross. Now 10 years old he's the most affectionate and smartest dog I've ever owned. They come in long and shorter coat versions and he has the longer coat. He looks like a small, all-black setter with a white blaze on his chest. If he's representative this cross should be developed into an official breed. Being owed by him has been a joy.

All of these are smart, robust, good in cold weather, and can carry their own water and food. You didn't mention what area of the world you are in. tropical and warmer areas require canines more suitable for warm weather.
But do check the shelters first. There are wonderful companions just waiting for a forever home there. Three of the above were from a shelter, the malamute from a local breeder - all wonderful dogs.

Giorgina,our labradoodle, is a great all around buddy and always seems to know when she must “sit and wait” when I’m trying to take a picture. The wait will be getting much longer as I,just yesterday, got the new Sony XR10 and it’s going to take a very long time to figure it all out. Will wait a bit myself to talk about the camera but the dog,she’s been great from day 1.
