I like this. If you want an open discussion, post in the main discussion section. Nobody is taking that away.

Well done Ron, I think this will be a successful section and we are lucky to have experienced and knowledgeable members giving thoughtful answers to our problems. However, I also appreciate that in the General Photography Discussion responses to questions are often invaluable and interesting and I hope this continues to be the case in addition to the new section.

Perhaps I am only adding to the confusion for the new category?
If this new category is only for highly qualified professional photographers that are connected, and no one else, how is this beneficial to everyone wanting to learn.
By the way. I am an 83 year old Professional Photographer who has made my living in most aspects of Imaging for over 65 of those years.
Not bragging, just that I enjoy most of the UHH categories.

Very true, it's a useful addition and a good selection of Mentors.

It would be nice if admin could add a feature to the site to let you know when sections you are subscribed to have new posts/ no make that new topics, (Posts already come under the watched topics feature). It probably would want to come under a latest topics view rather than last post view.

Looks like the “Need to Know” threads need to get pinned, they’re already getting pushed down by new threads.

Here is a list of links for you to discover what you can expect from this section.

You and the mentors can make this section a success. Do not hesitate to ask even and especially if you are a novice.

Congratulations on the new Section. I have subscribed.

I note you ask posters to state their level of experience. Do you have any guidance on what constitutes 'level of experience'. It would be helpful if there was some sort of guidance on terms like 'beginner', 'novice', 'intermediate', 'enthusiast' etc. (Skip 'Pro' - too contentious). I think this would avoid folks going into long dissertations on their life's history.
The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know, so I consider myself an eternal beginner. However, modesty may not be beneficial for your section.

I don't get it either.
The newby, who doesn't know any better will still have to separate the wheat from the chaff from advice and opinions opined from often self-appointed experts--
"mentors" who may know what they are talking about, or might not; "mentors" who will still disagree with each other even though they belong to this special mentor group. The reader must still decide.
As it is now, we have a free flow of ideas, from anyone who wishes to contribute. In short time, a reader knows which contributors are credible and knowledgable, but it not limited by only their ideas.
The Main discussion for open ideas will still be available-I understand. But a closed discussion, limiting ideas from anyone but a group of elite mentors, whose ideas are already judged everyday by their responses; will serve little purpose, except to promote self aggrandizing from those who already take themselves too seriously
Still, I will read "Advice from the Pros" daily; as well as the Main Discussion.
Nothing really new under the sun here.

One more point: Will the elite experts/mentors still be permitted to give us advice in the Main Discussion---I certainly hope so.

I do think you missed something. Questions can be asked by anyone, but to keep the responses relevant and accurate, there is a group of qualified 'experts' who can post answers to the questions. This will tend to keep the wheat separated from the chafe. FWIW; From my point of view the panel members have shown themselves over time here at UHH to be more than qualified.

will have to see how it goes maybe main should become advice from the proles As dedicated photographers we should wait to see what develops :) Hopefully there won't be too many "experts" complaining in the main section about the answers given.

So is this saying that this will not be a forum??

One small suggestion.
You can't make changes to a post using the edit function. IMO the OP should be able to change their post.

Thanks

Our photo club did something like this for our monthly review of photos that would go up to the regional contest for judging. We all used to judge to pick our five submissions. Now only three out of ten "trained" club judges get to do the review and make the pick. We can do our own review while they do theirs but our input doesn't count. I dropped out because their process became too exclusive, too focused on competition.

Thank you for creating this new section! Hopefully, I just successfully subscribed. This site has taught me so much over the past couple years, but this section will be perfect for me (and others). No fear of snarky comments, just professional advice/help!

Thanks!
Patty
