I've been on the forum for nine months.
I'm considering a new camera body.
When I was comparing a Canon 80D against a 77D, one uhh member stated that the 77D was still a Rebel.
I understand that a xD is a Full Frame "professional" camera.
I understand that a a x0D is a Crop Sensor "intermediate" camera.
And I understand that a Rebel (or xxD) is a Crop Sensor "entry level" camera.

My question is: "What exactly is a Canon Rebel camera, or what is it not?"

I have not seen this defined in all my reading. And I know that my understanding may or may not be correct. I'm here to learn, do being corrected on my knowledge is not a problem.

All Rebels, as well as the 77D are all plastic bodies. The 77D is the number Canon chose for the T6S upgrade rather than calling it a T7S.

I've been researching the Canon 77D too, because it has a considerably smaller body/form factor than the 80D. It is actually considered part of the regular EOS line now, and is not labeled a 'Rebel,' unlike The T6s. However, it is the replacement model for the T6s.

There is no 'Rebel' label attached to the new 77D, even though it is the T6s replacement.

You're correct, but it has a similar basic body size and design so people tend to include it with the other Rebels, but it is definitely a step above.

What what I've seen it has design features, not to mention functionality, which puts it on a higher level than more traditional Rebels. Not quite an 80D perhaps, but a step above the t7i.

Yes, I agree. It does have the top LCD screen which the T7i Rebel lacks. The 77D also has the same sensor as the 80D. It has higher ISO capability than the 80D (25600+), and offers Bluetooth and Digital Video Stabilization, which are not available on the 80D. It has a bit slower shutter speed, has a Penatmirror Viewfinder instead of the Pentaprism, and is not weather sealed. The advantage I see would be the smaller size of the body vs. the 80D. (This appeals to me).

I think it was a mistake for Canon to slap "Rebel" onto some of their DSLRs. The same with Nikon and "Coolpix." Cameras should have numbers, not names. Try some comparison sites.

I have two 77d bodies and for myself, I am very pleased with the stepped up capabilities from my former T3i & T6. I actually had one of our local camera store employees tell me that he switched BACK to crop sensor from a full frame because he felt he didn't want to "re-learn" photography. I am only a hobbiest, though.

Interestingly, "Rebel" seems to be an American label - in the UK we don't have that categorisation at all. All UK Canons are known by their model numbers only. Which implies that it's purely a consumer branding/marketing device and has little technical basis relating to the actual camera capabilities.

I've had two Rebels ths XS and XSi and I've had a 50D which is also a crop sensor but in comparison the 50D feels like a professional camera. Crop sensor aside the 50D has a very smooth shutter compared to the Rebels and much better layout of controls and ergonomics. To me, that is the difference.

Not all "xD" are full frame. For example the 7D and the 7D Mark II. Both are Crop Sensor cameras but they are considered to be more than entry level, but not quite professional level bodies. That being said, I know some professionals that did use the 7D for weddings, fashion and other events for professional pay.

Rebels are simply consumer camera bodies. I have heard the 7D and 7D Mark II referred to as ProSumer bodies.
