Duck Plucker!

I spotted this bird by the literal cascade of feathers coming from a tree. The plucking motion was so rapid the flow of feathers was continuous. Yes, I know it was a Coot but Diane and I had so much fun laughing at the term "duck plucker" that it had to be the title of this post. When you get old you have to be a little silly when opportunity presents itself.

Beautiful shots of a majestic bird, Phil, and these show just how much I know about Eagles. I thought their diet consisted only of fish.

Thank you Donna! I think opportunistic is the best one word summery of the Bald Eagle's diet and shopping behavior. They will be very happy to dine on rabbit and even happier if they can take it from a hawk who has done the hard work. They are capable hunters and magnificent thieves. Coots, bless their muddy little hearts, are the very definition of easy pray.

Hi Linda, it was indeed a wonderful opportunity. We spent a lot of time with this bird and I have many shots. The feathers were really flying, and I never remember the video capabilities I am holding in my hand in moments like this. Thanks for the comment my friend.

I guess if the coot had cootlets (cootlings?), an alternative post title might have been motherplucker. (Groan.)

Where did you shoot these? I've never had the opportunity to be reasonably close to a bald eagle. Only fleeting glimpses of them, way off in the distance.

Hi globetrekker, duckplucker is a term that just begs to be played with. These were taken at Graylodge in the upper Sacramento valley. I think your best bet for an eagle is at the Sacramento Natl Wildlife Refuge, Willows center.

Eagles are scavengers.

Phil, excellent set showing nature doing what is required to stay alive.
