Save until you have the Cash on hand,
THEN Buy (IF you are convinced the expenditure is WORTH IT !)

AND - - SELL your OLD equipment to offset the cost !
Haven't been able to get there yet. But it's AWESOME advice. Us old time photogs, at least me, somehow feel our old EXPENSIVE stuff is still a money maker. Bur I know if I FOUND my old stuff I could buy a D700

Oh. I haven't had that problem. (of course, anything I get, that I did not sign up for, gets immediately directed into my spam folder. It eventually stops coming.

I read once about a comment by Ansel Adams saying it's not the camera, it's in the eye of the photographer. Ansel took amazing photos with a "brownie" type camera. I am sure you could do the same.
Also, get an older DSLR. I am a Canon guy, any you can get a Tsi, T3i or an equal Nikon for a couple hundred with a lense. Check out B&H or you local camera store. I have several digital, the latest being a Canon 80D, and several film cameras which i wiil not part with.
If you have older Nikon cameras, I think the lenses will work with the newer digital cameras.
Hope this helps out a little. I have found that going to a local camera store will be a wealth of info and people are more than willing to share info.
