Our Christmas Cactus is the most neglected plant in the house, but now blooming just in time for Christmas.

Very nice pic of a very interesting plant. We have a red one and a white that are about 9 years old. They are newer varieties that are not as day length particular as the older ones. My grandmother had one that would only bloom if put in the closet overnight for about 6 weeks. Ours bloom off and on all year, but if I let them get dry for about a week in mid-November then water regularly I usually have blooms at Christmas.

Hi wjones8637,
It would be nice to have a less temperamental Christmas Cactus, but I think I'm stuck with one.
Thank you for your valuable information and comments.

Hi vonzip,
When the Christmas Cactus finally bloomed, it gave me another excuse to take a few more pics. I'm glad you like the cactus bloom, and thank you for your kind comments.

Beautiful bloom, color and capture, Gary!! After this gorgeous gift, you need to pay more attention to your plant and maybe sing some Christmas songs to her!! I water mine once a week and mine always gifts me with hundreds of flowers!

Angela, I believe you truly have a "green thumb" and really enjoy caring for your plants. I grew up in a seasonal commercial green house growing bedding plants and tending large gardens, but I didn't get much of a green thumb. However, I have love and deep appreciation, especially for flowering plants. I promise to take better care of the Christmas Cactus in the future, but it is unlikely I'm going to sing to it.

Thank you, Angela, for your kind comments, and wonderful information.

Hahaaa.... I'm sure your plant won't mind if you don't sing to her, but maybe you can hum every now and then!! You never know, your thumb might turn a beautiful shade of green!! Enjoy the rest of the weekend, Gary!

Angela, how can you be sure the Christmas Cactus is a girl? I know the difference between tomato and squash blooms, but didn't discover my stray cat was male until a few weeks ago. It is obviously neutered; no no baby cats, but I can usually tell the difference with most mammals, including humans. Neutered cats are more difficult. When the cat was laying on its back on my lap grooming its self, a definite boy part popped out. Now I have to come up with a new name. My daughter suggested Bruce.

I don't know what this has to do with a Christmas Cactus, but I promise to take better care of the cactus, possibly even hum to it.

Hahahhaa.... Gary, I just figured your Christmas cactus was a girl because it's pink... but I have no idea how you can tell the sex of a tomato and squash blossom!! As far as your kitty goes, you're lucky it turned out to be a boy... I've had many cats and at one time 7 (one for every day of the week), now sadly down to 3... but males are so much more affectionate than the females... I have 2 boys and one drama queen girl!! The boys always look for affection while she just annoys me when she wants something!!
...and I think Bruce is a great name for your kitty... I have an Andrew, Bob and Lola!!

...post some pictures of him!!

I have a Christmas cactus that belonged to my grandmother who passed away in 1956--I was only 1 year old, so I don't remember her. It rarely blooms, but when it does I get crazy excited!! It has the same pink blossoms. Keepsakes!
