The only purpose they seem to serve is advertising. They don't protect against theft. Since my cameras have it, I use the "Copyright" function through the Menu.
What the pros do around here is watermark some pics and post them on FB tagging the customer so all can see and we know who done the work. It’s just advertising I’m sure. When the prints are delivered by Dropbox or however they are free of marks.
I put my "signature" on the lower border of the photo. Thus, when it is mounted, matted and framed, it doesn't show. The matte is signed in the lower right corner of the opening, near the photo.

Copyright the image through the menu in your camera.
I now use a smaller "signature" watermark on any digital images that I share either online or email to friends and family.
I now try to keep this low on the shot so that it could be covered in the matting process. I've been known to color coordinate the signature to the shot if either white or black distract from, or blend into the background too much. I do this in PhotoShop using the "Text" tool which has limited fonts, I haven't used LightRoom yet.

I use Alamoon watermark. regards, Alfie.
I have my signature and the year in a nice silver that is about 50% opacity. I place it in the bottom left corner running vertical along the edge. I have created a brush in PS and an export in light room that will add this watermark. Its not as noticeable but still serves its purpose. Don't forget that there are also digital water marking services.

As you have seen you will get a lot of comments on the reasons to add or not to add signatures or watermarks to your photos. However to answer your question, the easiest is to use Lightroom as this is a feature of the Export Module. You can also use Photoshop by creating a transparent layer, add your signature from a scanned image, a photographed image of your signature or sign it directly using a tablet and then align it to a corner. Matt Kloskowski includes this subject and how to make it an automated process in his "Photoshop for Lightroom Users" video series. I have not checked but I am sure there is a lot of on line help for adding signatures.
Most so called watermarks are VERY distracting. They are big and really draw the eye right to them. The photo is ruined in my opinion. The content of the photo is there but it is worthless for anything else. I really like the painting type signature down in the corner. Not distracting at all. Looks good and it does identify the photographer.

Well I guess if someone thinks differently than you, they are
"misguided"..really.
I have struggled with watermarking photos for proof discs and Facebook. I have PSE and the best I can do is my name and limited placement. I saw an add on Facebook for "Photopolish" and watched the video. It seemed to be easy and have all the features I needed. It was priced right so I downloaded it. All I can tell you is that the program is GREAT and well worth the money. I won't go on about its virtues so you can look it up and see for yourself. photopolish.co

I refuse to even view a watermarked photo. So, naturally I don't use a watermark.

How do you know if it's watermarked until you view it?

I don't think anyone would buy my husband's paintings without his signature on them and he sells a lot of paintings throughout the year, all with signatures.
I offer unsigned photos, but people ask me to sign them all the time. I keep several colors of paint pens with me just for that purpose.
