Unless you're shooting bif or low-light, I'd skip the D500. How much and how often you shoot may determine the camera that you purchase, whether the 5xxx series or the 7xxx series. You should be able get a used or refurbished D7100 or D7200 at a very reasonable price. If you are a casual photographer, I'm sure the same would be true with something in the 5000 series, which are good but not built quite as sturdily.

My wife overheard me on various occasions talking about the Tamron 18-400. She surprised me with one in Nikon mount for my birthday. Unfortunately I shoot Pentax so I have to buy a Nikon body with or without a lens. Any advice? IMHO the 3000 series would be too basic, and a D500 too expensive. I am leaning towards the 5000 or 7000 series.

What a good wife you have Shutterbugsailer. All I get is....thats nice.... LOL

A lot of us on UHH have good and understanding wives, Rich. When I've made camera purchases, my wife has told me that I deserved to have something nice. How is that for an understanding wife?? Ofc I'd given up golf!!

Believe me, I was just kidding. We have been married 53 years and she is the best thing that ever happened to me. We kid each other a lot, but if I really wanted something, she would say "go for it."

Check with Tamron, I believe they can switch the back plate, even better take it back to the store and see if they would have one for pentax

D7200 on sale at B&H. Will meter with older AI Nikkor lenses in A or M modes and has a focus motor in the body. Has a crop sensor so your Tamron will have the field of view of a 600mm on a FF body.

I purchased a second D 7100 refurbished from KEH. It had 47 actuations on it. KEH is very reputable and stands by their sales.

I have both the D7100 and the D7200. I would recommend the D7200 mainly for the larger buffer size. Don't overlook buying a refurbished model, will save you a few $$$.

My Tamron 18-400 is mounted on a D7500 and it seems to be a great combination. I've only had the camera for a few weeks and haven't tried my other lenses on it.

Just picked up the D7200 at best buy with 18-55 and 70-300 lenses for 1K. Can't wait to try it.

AMEN to below post! I finally bought an A77ii for my A-mount lenses just so I don’t have to mess with all those adapters on my A6000.

You hit the one issue with Sony aps-c cameras. Tamron, Sigma, Tokina have all somehow missed the E-mount. Until that changes, I will continue using my old and tired Nikon 400 with a dumb adapter. It works, but why? I do have an A-mount and an la-ea3 adapter for my Minolta macro lens. Works fine, but I would jump at a long lens if they let me have one.
