My wife overheard me on various occasions talking about the Tamron 18-400. She surprised me with one in Nikon mount for my birthday. Unfortunately I shoot Pentax so I have to buy a Nikon body with or without a lens. Any advice? IMHO the 3000 series would be too basic, and a D500 too expensive. I am leaning towards the 5000 or 7000 series.

Both the 5600 and the 7200 are now on sale.

Thanks to everyone for their advice. Black Friday is almost here, and it will be a D5500, D5600, or D7200. Might as well get it with the 2 lens kit. Not much more than body alone.

Often the 2 lens kits include a long lens without VR so make sure you know what you are getting.

I know that. A few years ago I got a Canon Rebel T3.with a 2 lens kit. Neither the body nor the lenses had VR. The 75-300 telephoto was next to useless at the long end, unless the light was very strong or a tripod was used.

Sounds like you got a license for a new camera to fit your lens, sweet.

Go for the D7000 series. They have internal motors and can handle a wide variety of lenses that the D5000 series cannot. Cameta has some incredible prices on refurbished with one year warranty.

Why not exchange the lens for the Pentax mount if one is available?

The OP already stated that it does not come with a Pentax mount...

Could not find one on the BH site. And even if it existed, were it to have not necessary connections for aperture AF, etc, it would cost almost as much as an entry Nikon body and still would not perform nearly as well

Unfortunately it is not made in Pentax or Sony mount. I do like that it has more buttons, and is splash resistant to boot.

You hit the one issue with Sony aps-c cameras. Tamron, Sigma, Tokina have all somehow missed the E-mount. Until that changes, I will continue using my old and tired Nikon 400 with a dumb adapter. It works, but why? I do have an A-mount and an la-ea3 adapter for my Minolta macro lens. Works fine, but I would jump at a long lens if they let me have one.
