Got a tamron 18-400 as a gift. Which camera should I buy?

My wife overheard me on various occasions talking about the Tamron 18-400. She surprised me with one in Nikon mount for my birthday. Unfortunately I shoot Pentax so I have to buy a Nikon body with or without a lens. Any advice? IMHO the 3000 series would be too basic, and a D500 too expensive. I am leaning towards the 5000 or 7000 series.

Go for a D7xxx series. More button driven & less menu driven. Plus that series has the ability to meter with older AF & MF lenses. the D5xxx does not. The other option is to return it for one in a Pentax mount (if available)

And I bet you loved him even more when he surprised you with it. My wife prefers flowers and jewelry btw

Unfortunately it is not made in Pentax or Sony mount. I do like that it has more buttons, and is splash resistant to boot.

The Dxxx series will also AF with non AFS lenses as it has a motor in the body. The D5xxx series will only AF with lenses that have a motor in the lens

D5500 here and happy, but from what I have observed here on UHH most will recommend D7200 for good reasons. Both cameras have identical 24 MP APS-C sensor, 5500 is smaller, much lighter, about $600 cheaper, but 7200 also has features like in body AF motor, 2 card slots, AF fine tune etc. According to DxO Mark these two cameras took first two places in Best APS-C body contest when released two years ago. So far my camera can produce better Image quality than I can... :-)

Just get a refurbished or used 7100/7200 for about the same $$$ as the 5 series.

I just bought the Tamron 18-400 for my D7100 and they make a great combination. I don't think I will being taking this lens off the camera.

Probably will be the same with me. I will leave the Tamron on the Nikon, and use my Pentax k50 with a 17-50 f2.8 lens for landscapes, low light, and indoor shots. If that works out, I will sell my sony and Panasonic mirrorless systems. I just find that I prefer the feel of a DSLR

I would recommend the D7200. Add me to that list.

I am a freelance press photographer. The Tamron 18 to 400 was a gift from heaven for me No more schlepping around 2nd bodies and lens. 1 lens does it all I am a Canon fan and married the lens to the 80D So happy
