Isn't there enough killing in the world already?

Yep, but you can't get away from it. I don't like killing things, but I'll poison the rats living in my walls. If I knew of a better way to get rid of them, I'd do it.

Pellet,............ I was firing a .22 in the yard.
Don't let up, they seem like they breed faster than you can shoot them. I have a neighbor with a large stand of Bamboo. It is the official breeding station for the rats in my area. Some are big enough to not be affected by a standard pellet. I found these H&N Hornet Pellets to be the resolution.

While I understand this poisoning action I am not suportive of it for at least two reasons:
1) Whatever eats the poison dies within the walls and it can become a serious problem.
2) Whatever is the problem as not only rats will feed on that. My neighbor who had most of her appliance burned out due to squirrel gnawing on a wire had poison out and I told her that birds would get to that too. She agreed and stopped that. Now she now shoot the critters but with her this more noise than harm - She uses a BB carbon cartridge pistol shooting small metal balls.

By the way spotted three more tonight and when you see three you know there are more.

That's why I use a trap. Lot more humane to relocate

Nope, it's not. Almost all wild animals range over a certain size area. Get them out of it and they have to compete with local critters (fight) plus have to try to find food, water and shelter. Most will die slowly, painfully rather then a quick death from the projectile. But it makes folks who have never studied the animals life cycle feel better. Hunting actually improves the herd as it controls the population to what the range can support. That's my two cents worth!

From my standpoint, I'd much rather be relocated than shot.....

Sorry, I did not get to finish my comment before my fingers hit the Return key. I relocate these squirrels all to the same area, where they have other friends that they have palled (sp?) around with before. And it is near a Sheetz, where there are plenty of food scraps, so I feel a lot better than killing them.

You might have a similar problem I do.
Darn neighbor lady feeds the Turkeys, squirrels, deer and her Alpacas plus any other critter that comes into her 5 acres. Unfortunately that brings real rats to the property and now I'm catching about 5 a month where I never saw any rats for the last 25 years. Think we can get her to control her feedings? Nope, she loves all creatures, even ones that carry disease.
Any ideas of how to stop someone like her?

Alex

Move or het her to move

I love my Friday night beer. We also had quite a squirrel problem this year. So I found myself one Friday sitting on my front porch with a gun laying across my lap drinking a beer and I got to thinking-- shooting squirrels off the Front porch while drinking beer. Dang it, I might be a redneck!

I've shot as many as 30 Round Tail Squirrels in a month and never put a dent in them. I've got a 177 springer pellet rifle. I don't like the poison because we have Great Horned Owls and Red Tailed hawks around. Their numbers are down this year, but the pack rats have moved in. They only run around at night, only been able to trap one. NATURE RULES.

I like wild animals, they taste good. But the rats are another story. They carry all kinds of diseases and will bite when cornered. They also MULTIPLY FAST !!!!!

All the more reason to trap. If you use the right bait, you’ll get them. I don’t even have to use bait much anymore for the squirrels—they’re stupid enough to go into a trap under the bird feeders

Shot and killed a tree rat from 150 + feet away with a BB gun.

That makes 5 this month. The record is 7...

Darn things are multiplying!

Let's see some photos you shot of the "Tree Rats", dead or alive; or, don't you have a camera?

Wait until you get critters make themselves at home in your castle.

Wires isolation? Bon appetit. If you like bonfires, this will do it too.
Bathroom breaks? What is a bathroom?
Water tightness? That is for boat only.
Weird noises in the wall? Sleeping hours are not for you anymore.

Once it happens to you or someone across the street (as it did for us) the season is open all year round on nuisance. I have a black squirrel whose nest is in a tree, I never shoot at it. I do not shoot at birds or anything else. I spotted a flying squirrel a few weeks ago when we where cutting trees next door. I am still rubbing my eyes. That thing is not native of Florida. If I see it again I'll shoot it with a camera but that is one that will also be protected.

I spotted a rat on day when it was pouring but could not find where it came from I could not ambush it. I cock my rifle with no pellet and shoot it when I have stray dogs or cats.

Benefit of controlling those rats beside the house invasion? Birds. We now have nests all over the place.

If you are against all killings, why do you wash? You kill all sort of critters living in your skin that are beneficial to your health along with other nuisance. You likely kill more stuff doing that than my occasional squirrel.

If you've got critters in your attic you've got a problem, as I found out that we did. For years we had no problem due to our roaming home security service....the best dang cat we ever had. We never saw a rat nor had attic problems. There was access to the attic in the garage and Tigger loved to hang out there. If I ever needed to find him, that's where he'd be, snoozing away, waiting for prey. What I didn't know was that without Tigger our home was a sieve. Eventually we lost Tigger and we found out we had a problem. We sealed up the garage access and every other point of entry that we could find, only to find that we'd missed a couple. It took awhile, but we finally got them all plugged. Yes, I will call them varmints in the sense that both rats and squirrels can gain access to the house by the smallest of entry points. If there is any evidence that they have been in the house, the points must be found and sealed. My plumber even found a small water leak under the house (we have a pier and beam foundation). A rat had been using it as its personal drinking fountain. I had to seal up all the vents which had become compromised using that spray stuff that hardens.

Having an attached garage presented problems, too. I had to make sure that the entire drywall in the garage was solid. After 50 years it had accumulated some holes.

We have big problems around here with the rabbits and squirrels getting into the engine compartment eating the wiring. YES RABBITS. The wife does't drive her car much and i have to keep the nests cleaned out.
