And now there are two...
There are now two cameras rated by Dxomark as having a better sensor than the Nikon D850.
The Nikon D850 costs $3,300 and came out in August 2017.
It was rated 100 points (on a sliding scale- it is not "out of 100").
The Pentax 645Z costs $8,500 and came out in April 2014 (but the results were just posted today).
It was rated 101 points.
The Hasselblad X1D-50C costs $8,995 and came out in June 2016.
It was rated 102 points.
You can check out the tests at this link:

What does any of this matter to our photography???

There are some people, with deep pockets, who love to have the "latest and greatest"-
whether it is a camera, or a car, or a computer, etc.
I know people who buy a new camera body every two years in order to have
"the latest and greatest".

You know the answer to that. Lack of talent. Highest rated camera = best photos.
Why was there a rush of thousands of photographers buying the Nikon D850
when it was the first camera to be rated "100" by Dxomark?

That's old news, the score of 101 for the Pentax Z was first reported a month and a half (maybe a bit longer) ago!
Speters- the news was "reported"- I read about it here,
but it was not officially posted on their website until yesterday.
I know, because I glance at it regularly.
Neither did Eisenstadt and he seemed to do better than most
Again this is apples and oranges, how can you compare 35mm format to a medium format camera, I would hope that the medium format would win every time.

I agree 100%! When you make your living with a camera use what works best for you. How long would you have to work to pay to pay for the new gear every time DXO came out with new numbers? A fool with more money then sense may try to keep up but why? "SS" have any of your clients looked at the product you provide and say that you could have done better with a newer camera, I thought not. If by chance you were doing scientific shots that were needed for research, maybe. Some people are so busy chasing numbers that they miss the game.

Some people? Most of us couldn’t take a good photo if our life depended on it, no matter the gear.
Most of us, if not all of us also couldn’t tell the gear used if we were looking at two identical photos.
Those who are skilled have been taking award winners with way inferior cameras for a very long time and will continue to do so even if the sensor isn’t made by Sony or if the camera isn’t a Nikon.
On another note, congratulations to Nikon for engineering a superb camera.
You are right, the camera is only a tool and it takes the brain behind the camera to have the know how to take a great photograph.
