All you would want to know and exactly how to set it up with simple explanations as to how and why.

Funny you should say that, Jerry. I have been a cop for over 30 years now, and one of the quotes I use a lot is, "if you're going to break the law, don't break the law."

Thank you all for your comments. I knew I was getting a good deal on my D7100. I just was not positive of the performance compared to more recent upgrades. A couple comments answered that for me. Thank you all.

Just purchased a used Nikon D7100 from a relative. He charged me $200, and from reviews I read I feel that is a steal. The shutter count is at 25,270. I was honest with him and told him he should be asking a lot more than that but he insisted being family that was all he wanted. He justified it by saying he was getting nothing while it sat in his closet. The reviews on the camera were very good but I trust the opinion here so I was hoping to get some opinion from you fine folks. He also threw in Nikkor 50mm f/2.8 AF-S which I already have, and the camera has all the original packaging. This is a step up from my current D5100. Looking forward to getting out this week and taking it for a test run.

From my experience, that's family!

Enjoy it.

Jerry...it seems educating you is somewhat a full time job.

The original phrase refers to horses..." ride 'em like you stole 'em".

I used to ride quite a bit...and sometimes the horse would pretend he was stolen...much to my chagrin.

But one can't expect to keep a stolen car for very long so they would drive the hell out of it and dump it.

He obviously loves you so much that he wanted to promote your photographic endeavors.
What a great hand up in a hand me down. Now all you need is to share your work with it with him.
He'll beam you a smile from ear to ear for the joy it will bring him. So, the only question now is who will give the greater gift.

You have been very lucky. I hope you do not have to cut his/her lawn grass for the rest of your life to repay this favor :-)

btw - I would buy a 18-140 lens for about $200 and you should be all set. The longer focal lengths make the camera much heavier. 18-140 is the best balance.

Love my D7100 with a great lens attached 90% of the time ...... Nikon 18-140MM f3.5-5.6. I've seen this lens refurbished for around $300.00.

Family is special, find a special way to thank him for his generosity. A hugh gift certificate to his favorite restaurant, motel for two for a weekend.

My son just sold a D5100 with two lenses for $625. You got a great deal. One was a 55-200 not sure what the other lens was. He is buying a new Sony a6500 with 16-50 kit lens.

Great deal! Reminds me of when my friend bought a 5 year old 6 cyl Honda Accord from a man in Florida for $200. (The AC didn't work, otherwise, the car was perfect!)
