I took these this morning. My student had just finished her riding lesson and I had her pose with her horse in the barn door. The dogs were posed in the same place, but I sat on the ground to get the shots. The bright, midday light gave me the kind of contrast I wanted as well as good detail I think. The contrast may not be to everyone's liking, but I wanted the images to "pop." Next time I might try getting shots with less intense light just to see the difference and keep the subjects from squinting. A fill flash might help, too. We'll see. Feel free to make suggestions.

I used a Canon 100-400 lens on a 7D.

A wonderful set Vicki. Your use of the contrasty light with the horse and student worked very well, you put the light (and detail) just where it needed to be. Your perspective and exposure with the dogs made some very fine portraits, I like them a lot! Strong light can produce great detail when handled well, as with this set. Fine work.

I agree!!!!!!

Nice ones, Vicki. I would have liked to see some fill flash in Nos. 3 and 4. Great poses.

Anything with horses dogs and the youngsters is great. I think you did a fine job. I need to get some like this at the barn i board at

I had been thinking about getting some shots with this kind effect and subject matter for a couple of years. The moment was right this time, and I just happened to have my camera at the barn for getting shots of butterflies (if you can believe that!). I'm glad it worked. You can be sure there will be more attempts with different subjects.

Please let me know when you post some from your barn. I'd love to see them cessnalvr.
