Wow Vicki.......so far 11 pages of responses to your photos! EXCELLENT! I love the high contrast that really pops your subject. I also agree with you that some fill flash would be helpful to help remove some of the stark contrast in the faces of people and animals. Nice and sharp images too! Way to go!

Thanks so much Brent. This was kind of impromptu with no time to adequately prepare the setup. I grabbed my camera which I had planned to use to get shots of butterflies. The rest, as they say, is history. Bottom line; it gave me ideas for other shots as well as what other lighting I might try. It was all fun.

Is it safe to use flashes around horses? I'm a city boy, and I really don't know. I had assumed that is why a fill flash wasn't used.

It depends on the horse. Sometimes they just need to get used to it (which is true of anything that seems strange to them). This horse would have been fine I think. Bottom line: I hadn't taken the flash with me since I had planned to get shots of butterflies. It's also possible a flash might have ruined the dark background.
