The Sony 100-400 FE is one of those few purchases that has exceeded my expectations.

I read a good review on this lens. Great for wildlife, and very sharp.

I went back and forth between that lens in the contemporary vs sport versions but ended up with the C version due mainly to the weight difference as I like to shoot hand-held a lot. One of these days I want to rent the S version just to try it out. Do you shoot mostly on a tripod with it?

What's the one photography purchase (besides a new camera) you've made within the past year (or 2) that you feel the best about?

For me, I'd have to say my best GAS purchase recently was the Canon 135 f2L I bought from a local guy about 6mos ago for $750.

I knew it was a great lens the moment I popped it onto my camera, but I really came to appreciate it at an indoor rodeo last weekend.

The lighting was extremely challenging and I don't think I'd have gotten anywhere near the kind of shots I did with any other lens in my arsenal. That F2 aperture really saved the day and the reach on my 7D2 was just about right (maybe even a tad too much for this venue). Now I can't wait to shoot some other event in the same venue.

Interesting you said that. Sold some older Canon FD bodies and lenses and bought the same lens (and I like it just as much! Great lens). I'm going to try it as an alternative to my 70-200 f2.8 L IS for some indoor sports this winter. - lots lighter.

I still have several FD lenses ( along with my Canon T-70 camera). One of these days I'm going to try one of this FD-EF converters (of course I know I'll lose AF)

Or you could sell the FDs and buy an EOS-1N (or V) and use your EF lenses for film - they are dirt cheap (paid $100 for an immaculate EOS-1N)

Nah, my T-70 is a great little Film camera and besides I'm not really into shooting film any more. I just thought it might be fun to see what sort of results I might get with the FD lenses on my 6D.

Recently purchased a Canon 16-35 f4 lens for my full frame camera. Nice to have a wider capability.

A used Panasonic 25 mm f 1.4 Summilux DSLR (50 mm equivalent on Olympus). Opened up the possibilities for night photography and lowlight indoor photography.

Sigma 105mm f2.8 Macro - the best lens for macro work and also a great walk-around for my D7100.
I sold my D800 and 3 lenses to 'upgrade' to the D7100 + 50mm f1.8, 35mm f1.8, the Sigma (above).
I recently bought a 70-300 f4.5-f6.3 and the phenomenal Tokina 11-16 f2.8.
No further plans for lenses but I'd love a second D7100.
I do a lot of video work so I have a 2m crane, a 1m slider and an ancient Velbon tripod + a pretty new carbon tripod from Jessops (looks like a copy of the Manfrotto) and a Manfrotto monopod.
The Velbon tripod's head has a few cracks which was due to the weight of the D800. Epoxy fixed that problem.

Wish list:
The D7100 back-up so I'd have two 'active' lenses on the trot
A pro tripod
600mm f2.8 lens for wildlife (that'll never happen)

Better start saving, I guess...
